Stump Jumpers......
........at least, in Oregon, (Off Tangent), was slang that meant the fish and game enforcement troopers of the Oregon State Police.
In my 30 year career with the Oregon D.O.T. Motor Carrier Enforcement Division, we dealt with, and used frequently, what were called "Jump Scales".
They were portable scales used for the law enforcement weighing of commercial motor vehicles out in the field, in conjunction with traffic stops, at the side of the highways, on primary and secondary routes--whether City, County, State, or Federal.
And, yes, it was danger close. I "jumped" from weighing commercial motor vehicles with the portable "scales" more than once, in order to save my life--hence, the term "Jump Scales". I worked with a partner with the "jump scales", and we did everything we could to mitigate the hazards. But, in the end, it was a hazardous environment. (Back On Tangent.) <M>
