Blown Fuse ????

Just got my new 2014 RT-S, and was needing to inflate my tires a few PSI. Took out my Slime portable compressor and plugged it in to the 12 Volt outlet in the rear trunk. Nothing. Turned on the bike, then it worked.

Worked for about 10 seconds then cut off.

Now I believe I may have blown a fuse, because my 12 Volt no longer works.

Question -- Should I have blown a fuse? Compressor says it uses 15 amp. How do I determine which fuse is connected to the rear 12 Volt outlet?

Probably a blown fuse. I think the fuse that powers the outlet is 5 amps Check it out in your manual. It is fuse # 7 in my 2014 RTL in the frunk.

I think I may have found my answer. The manual says this 12 Volt is 3 amps.

OK, so I replace my fuse. I can do that.

Another question --- I carry this portable compressor with me. Say I need it on the road. How do I make it work? My 2012 RT didn't have this problem. Why is the 2014 such lower amp fuse?

the 12 volt outlet in the trunk is key switch controlled i believe if you move the fuse from slot 6 to slot 7 than it becomes live all the time

Is it advisable to move the 12 Volt to a blank, then insert a 15 or more amp fuse? Can this be done?

The 12V in Trunk is LOW amps (5A). It WILL blow a compressor!

You DON'T! The gauge of the wiring would not handle it. It's made for low amperage devices like USB ports.

Add a Fused Dongle directly to the Battery Terminals!

You would have to completely re-wire it if you want it to be over 3a.

What I do, is have a battery tender -> 12v cigarette lighter socket cable. My battery tender is on a 30a fuse directly to the battery.

That will drive the compressor no problem.

My Battery Tender Jr pigtail is connected directly to the battery and is fused for 7 amp capacity, the same draw as my portable compressor. That's how I power the compressor.

If you have one near you, Cycle Gear keeps several interchangeable battery connections instock because of all the new varied needs from USB power to air compressors that could have a final use of battery tender/charger connection. Usually 12ga. wire is enough for most motorcycle battery powered devices.

Per mine & others recomindations for not blowing fuse fyi

can add a line fuse here easier & size you want, than changing the fuse block. & works great on any vehicle:thumbup:

No amp rating or wire gage info was shown. Wires may have gage info printed on them, not sure what the cigarette socket can handle.
