Belt Tensioner

I've always been intrigued by this.

Some people seem to have severe problems with vibration and others (me included) have not.
Much like that "other" subject that I'm not bringing up.

I wonder if the vibration is due to differences in the belt (maybe from different manufacturers) or adjustment or maybe it's all in the heads of the ryder :joke:

I asked the techs that manufacture the tensioner components why some have a whine or why two spyders with same static tension, one may have vibration and the other none.

Their response was "There are many steps that go into the process of manufacturing a belt, so there will be much more of a chance of variations in the finished product. These include tight spots such as a chain has or a slightly heavier spot in the belt from overlapping bands, slightly different rubber composition between batches, etc."

I also noticed more vibration issues when they went to the hard grey coating on the belt teeth in 2011 to quiet them down.

Some may have to do with the individual riders tolerance or sensitivity to vibration, or one rider may think the vibration is terrible and another may not notice as much depending on what they rode before.

The vibration is felt in the floorboards - the whole bike shakes when first taking off , and them will vibrate in higher gears unless I keep the revs up. I rarely get to 5th gear. I am not a Spyder mechanic, but it seems to me that since so many other Spyder owners have felt the same vibration and have been able to eliminate it by installing a belt tensioner, one would think that this is the solution. Too bad taht an aftermarket company had to come up with a fix.

2011 RTL belt vibration

BRP probably is thinking along the pathway of if we add anything else to the Spyder we will have increase costs to the entire line up.

Personally at this minute an day do not have a belt tension device installed on my Spyder and it is virtually vibration free at least to my style of riding. I keep checking the belt tension and it is within specifications.
