Bajaron's oil catch can

This is Bajaron's oil catch can setup & I made a promise to him if I did it I would post the how to.

I had the pleasure at Lamont's BBQ to see it & I liked the idea of not having to empty a can as the oil will end right back in the engine after it's shut down.

1. Universal glass fuel filter. It does come with hose barb fittings but none were used. (to bulky)

2. Foam, Foam installed & the fuel filter & gasket that I removed from the fuel filter.

3. The new setup connected to the engine. (Be sure not to cut the vent hose to short. easy fix if you would happen to though)

4. The final deal.

To sum it up, it is a very cheap & easy mod to keep the oil out of the air box. My only consideration in the process that I didn't do was to take the nut ends of the filter to the grinder & make them round, so the trip into the hose would be smoother, but I didn't & all went well.

Will update after the riding season as to how it worked for me.;)

I looked at those after seeing this... Not sure I like that upper hose connection... Looks like it isn't very secure - Not enough real estate on the filter housing. *but hey... If it is working and holding... So be it. I see why it has to be that way though.. the nipples that came with it seem like they would be restrictive somewhat, not to mention adding to the length.

I may have to do this. I have TWO oil catch cans now... In line. Experimenting. I was getting blow by oil out through the breather element and the fit was too tight as it was... So now I'm keeping my eye on it. I don't mind emptying catch cans... With the oil level a bit below the full mark, and bike running right I get hardly any in there.

With a bad O2 sensor, you will find that you get a lot more blow by... and I'm betting that you'll still end up with oil in the air box. I guess the choice is accepting that it may happen... I blew a lot of oil out via the catch can method once my O2 Sensor went. Spyder was running like crap.

Ameobe,

How is the oil catch working so far?

 No issues what so ever 2k+ miles with it installed.

Again, If I were to do it again, I would probably round the ends for the hose connections.
But also, there is no pressure involved so no worries.

Glad to hear it but not surprised. I've got 4 or 5k on my mod and it looks like it's not doing anything at all! It is, of course, doing a great job. But it's so trouble free and clean it appears to be doing nothing.

What more could you ask for! Thanks again for the How-To post!

THE REAL CATCH CAN!!

No never did that. Was testing new supercharger before raceday and oil blew all over the engine. C5 Z06 GT1. Trip to auto parts store bought qt. of thinner poured it out and JB welded barb fitting in and attached the stand pipe with filter. There was no way to obtain a catch can before racing and I had to do something or go home.

Worked great for the weekend with 2nd. Place finish. Retired the can to the shelf for a good store bought can with drain as soon as I could get one ordered.

Good story to tell when asked, What's that?

I'm a noob with a 2011 RT-S SE5. Is this something I need to address? I have to ask, why doesn't CAN-AM address it instead of forcing customers to toil with it? Or is this a fix for a mod that causes a problem?

I also was curious what happens if oil gets in the air-box? Why does oil get in there? How does this fix it?

I'm sorry to be so lame to ask such basic questions. I don't understand why CAN-AM wouldn't have fixed or addressed the issue by now, but I am assuming that I have this issue and as a noob don't rightly know if I do.

:dontknow:

The RT has a different design. I have heard of no problems with the RT, and had none myself.

One thing we all seem to forget is these are fairly new machines and a new technology so there will be some things that have to be addressed as they crop up.

I don't forget this fact, I simply don't care when they charge $27K for these things. :roflblack: My Honda costs less and is more complicated than a Spyder. That fourth wheel adds a lots of confusion to the engineering process! /end sarcasm

I'm getting ready to do a 600 mile service - is oil in the airbox something I need to worry about afterward?

If you put too much oil in, then you will get some in the airbox. It has to have a place to go, and that appears to be the path of least resistance. Some people have done simple things like putting a piece of foam in the breather tube to prevent the oil from reaching the filter. I just put a K&N air filter in my Spyder as the oil won't harm it like it would a paper filter.

Also, ryding hard can force more oil into the airbox so that is something to be mindful of.
