• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

My wife and I have been searching for a decent backrest for our :spyder2: at an affordable price for a few months now. It's crazy the prices :yikes: that the manufacturers want for them (WE knew the aftermarket accessories were expensive when we bought the bike). We've looked at BRP, Corbin, also luggage backrest's by Givi. Has anyone bought one of these and/or how do they like it. 200$ total seems alot better then 500-1000$ They might not be as nice as BRP or Corbin but the price is right. Also does anyone know of any other backrest out there for the :spyder2:. Aaron

Nice find--- I have not personally seen those before.... maybe someone out here has. Pretty good bang for the buck compared to the other options you mentioned.

Maybe you'll have to be the guinea pig on this one! :thumbup:
 
BTW,

Who has installed the rear sport rack? I'm thinking of getting a rear bag or putting on the back rest eventually...at least starting with the rear bag unless there is a better option?

In regards to the rear rack, how easy is it to install? I assume it has to bolt on as it can have a bag on it or someone leaning against the back support...
 
The RoadKrome ones are interesting, and that is the first time I have seen them as well. If we didn't already have the BRP sport racks and back rests on ours, I may have been willing to give one of these a shot as well. The super comfort one looks like they attempted to match some of the BRP styling for the pad as well, but if you get everything you need for $399, that would be decent. The best price I found for the BRP was $495 for the combo with free shipping.

Bone Crusher, the install for the BRP Rear Sport Rack is not that difficult, but there are a couple of things you need to be aware of. The major one is the running of the release cable. It goes under the seat and follows a channel in the frame. You need to get the splice nut in there behind it to lock it in place. This will be a challenge if you do not have small fingers. My wife was able to get ours connected, and said she has no idea how a mechanic with larger hands would be able to do it. It comes with a long bolt that replaces the rear seat bolt, so you need to remove the gas shock on the seat in order to gain access to that as well. Also, when all is said and done, you will have 1 screw left over for the top center of your uner panel above the tire. For some reason they did not make that match up; however, the panel doesn't hang down or anything and serves its function well.

The BRP sport rack/backrest is expensive, but can be found at reasonable discounts on line. Its advantages are that it looks nice since it does not look like a bolt on, the curved pad really helps the passenger with the lateral forces and it is easily removable.

:agree: Plus they are color matched to the Spyders already. :)
 
That is $400. For under $500 you can have the BRP one with the rack (check ebay) RIVA South (Key Largo FL) had them on a couple weeks ago. $500 Shipped in the color of your choice if my memory serves me.

I bought the set for my wife's Spyder from louispowersports903 on EBay, I just checked and we actually paid $492.00 for it with free shipping.

However, the original poster is in Canada and for some reason there is some type of an agreement between BRP and US dealers that they will not ship items to Canada. Perhaps Riva is different, but I have dealt with a couple of other sellers on EBay who also state they cannot ship to Canada. :dontknow:
 
My biggest beef with the BRP sport rack is that they have yet to come out with a topcase that is meant to snap into it. Many of us have made modifications to get a GIVI topcase to fit--- but I think BRP really dropped the ball on this one. Other than holding the backrest -- the BRP sportrack is pretty useless.

You have a point there as well. I can honestly say that once my back rest went on I have not taken it off. I did look at the rear rack bag once, but didn't feel like it was going to offer me anything extra that I really needed.

So the rear bag isn't very good and other than the backrest, it's useless? What are other good options (the one on this thread?)?

The first backrest you see through this link is $400 but if you go to the next page you'll find a backrest for around $200 that fits the spyder plus you can get a storage rack as an option to bolt onto the backrest plus a bolt on luggage bag on the following page at a great price.
Also I have looked on ebay and other online sites and just like the other post said it is hard to find a place in the U.S. that will ship to Canada cheap. Cost + Shipping + maybe customs Duty = high cost.
We are going to buy one of these b ackrest in a couple of weeks so I'll post some pictures and let you know I think.:thumbup:

The rear bag is nice, but it is kind of small at the same time. In order to install it, you need to punch 2 holes in each side of the sport rack to mount the buckle the bag will connect to. I did not feel like doing any of that. There are a couple of narrow lips on each side that may allow for the connection of other things, such as a bungee net type carrier. The warning label on the BRP sport rack states to not put more than 15 pounds on it.

soft bags

We use water proof soft bags for long trips - easy to attach to and remove from BRP backrest. We also strap a camel pack to the bags for easy access to water.

We rode to LA from Seattle 2-up with this setup. We have a BRP rack/backrest with modified backrest luggage. Also soft bags with peg extensions. We would not been able to use the bags and ride 2up without the extensions.

When we got to a motel to spend the night, I took the luggage/backrest off as a unit,much easier relashing it in the morning.

We were gone about a week and packed way,way too much stuff with this setup.

Yes - I purchased the bags on line from ttp://aerotich.com. At the local Ace store I found rolls of nylon strapping and snaps and I made custom length straps. I strapped the first bag to the back rest and the second bag to both the the back rest and first bag. The bags are made with cinch straps and can be attached to each other with integrated straps. It took me a couple of times to get a system worked out but now I can get them on and off pretty quick. We rode over 2,000 miles, rain, bugs, dust, etc. and everything stayed dry and clean. With the nose-cone, Givi bags and the black bags we can carry more stuff than we need but it's nice to have the extra rain gear and street cloths.

I found it easier to buy a soft sided bag with all the connections/straps already on it.

The gran tour by kuryakyn has a wide velcro strap that goes around the back rest and also has 8 d-rings (4 on each side) on the bag with supplied adjustable straps; those straps are run through the (BRP sport rack) back rest. The bag attaches securely.

The gran tour may not be as big as the bag that draboo has; but, I like the one I have because of the different compartments.
