• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Are There Still People Out There Who Don't Think Helmets Are Necessary?

I don't think I can name a state that does NOT have a seat belt law today, however, there are some states which still don't have helmet laws. I wonder why that is? Is the motorcycle community more active in fighting such legislation, or are the lawmakers lacking the common sense that would tell them that both go hand in hand regarding the safety of motorists?

The Federal Government takes highway funds away from states which don't pass seatbelt laws. At one time they did the same for states that didn't pass helmet laws but the AMA fought very hard to pass legislation which stopped the practice. Quite simply, as cage drivers we don't have an organization to fight for our rights as the AMA does for our rights as motorcyclists. I'm a Life Member of the AMA primarily because they always go to bat for us. I know that there are those who don't agree that this is a good thing and that's their right but I believe in our freedom to ride the way we want to even though I also believe it is wise and prudent to wear a helmet and to wear seatbelts.

It really just comes down to a money issue. Not wearing a helmet costs more when there is a problem. If this is known, should the rest of us have to cover the cost of people who choose not to wear a helmet?

That's kind of what I thought... Some people will allow their rights to be taken away without even a blink, while other groups understand and protect those rights.
I agree that it is wise to wear both, but also believe there should not be laws to mandate it.

I just got back from riding for a week in Arkansas to find that a friend of mine, that made the CHOICE to never wear a helmet, payed the price for that choice. He was 48. The people that didn't get to make a choice are his 3 daughters and 2 grand children. I am pretty sure they would have chosen to have their Dad around for a while longer. I believe it is your choice, please choose wisely.
FYI he ran off the side of the road at less than 50 MPH, hit his head on the pavement and never woke up.

What about road pain....???

I want to mention something separate from the life-or-death angle.....

When I rode at 70mph with my visor up and no gloves (only did that once), I was hit by several bugs and a couple of 2 inch sized moths. On top of that the rocks from cars ahead of me were also stinging my hands and face. Everytime something hit me (no matter how small), it was very painful. Even a little drizzle of rain at that speed feels like golf balls on the skin. So how are the no-helmet/glove riders handling that pain....??? It's very distracting....

Look people, I dont like 99% of this crap. I wanna do what I wanna do, but lets face it Bonecrusher, we all pay out the :cus: for stuff, all the time.

Hell I have and will pay in out the ears for Social Security that I will never see, I would like to stop that. I would really perfer never to pay in taxes for schools cause I dont have any kids. I prefer not to pay for the 3 to 5 types of insurance I am legally required to do...

I mean I have been bled dry for crap Im never gonna use. But DONT WORRY PEOPLE!!!! socialized healthcare will fix all this and you wont have to pay the premiums anymore, and we wont see health care decisions based on money and NUMBERS and survivability.

So lets just use Statistics... To which my calculus stats teacher said the following: "There are lies, damn lies and statistics." You can literally bend any set of numbers into what you want to say in the name of statistics.

Just letting you know.

:agree:

Don't forget paying out your wazoo for welfare mothers to sit home and have 6 babys and have no clue who the father is on your tax dollar collecting free housing, food, heathcare and utilitys. Meanwhile, they drive around in a lexus SUV talking on thier $400.00 I phone and have more gold around thier neck than Mr. T. You want to talk about wasting billions of dollars.

It's ok to be passionate about our money being wasted, but lets put the passion were it belongs and not worry about the very few that splatter thier brain on the pavement.

This helmet debate is the least of our economic worries.......... :banghead:

Wait until the "do-gooders" learn that wearing a cervical-brace is actually where lives can be truly saved and permanent injuries reduced...

Don't laugh... that law will be coming around eventually when the "do-gooder's" deliver the idea wrapped in the package "in the interest and well-being of the people".

Again... if they can regulate how large a soft-drink can be... then surely they'll eventually encroach on other issues -- especially if the Health-Care reform is fully enacted. Then you'll see all kinds of regulations on what people can and cannot do in an effort to cut-costs.

The new laws will always seem to make sense by those delivering them... but beware... each inch they take is another inch you lose.

OK, I have finally made it through all four pages of posts and here is what I have say.

One of the biggest problem in the US today as I see it, there is no more personal responsibility. A law has to passed for everything to protect you from yourself. All I have to say to that is:

Screw That!

I am an intelligent adult that is capable of making my own decisions. I don't need someone telling me that my 4 1/2 foot tall 7 year old needs to be in a booster seat, I work with people shorter than that and they don't require a booster seat. I seriously wonder how I ever made it to adulthood. I never sat in a car seat, my father smoked in the car with the windows rolled up, I was a latch key kid from Kindergarten forward, there were no helmet laws for a bike and trust me I took my spills on the bike.

The government is trying to control every piece of our lives in order to "keep us safe" and I feel it is my job to keep me safe and teach my kids right from wrong.

Not wearing a helmet puts you at greater risk of death or injury. Not wearing full gear puts you at greater risk of sever injury. If you choose not to do either, that is your choice, I won't judge you if you don't judge me. But either way, the government needs to step back and let personal responsibility redevelop in the American people.

Getting off my soap box now.

Thank you sir. I to am an adult with the ability to think for myself.

Guess they should ban cheeseburgers too.....they kill people also.

Ditto on guns.

Ohhhhhhh.... No I didn't!

My brain..... MY CHOICE.

Money saved should be the LAST reason to take away my personal rights!

Since Michigan went no helmet I have been riding quite a bit without one...... Which is a really STUPID thing to do...... But in America we have the right to be stupid.

That being said....on my trip to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and eventually Durango..... I have been wearing my full face the whole time.... For a few reasons:

1. I don't have to mess with sunscreen.
2. I think I actually feel cooler with it on.
3. Wind buffeting is less.
4. Wildlife jumping out in front of us.
5. I want to be safe.
6. At my girlfriends request...I promised her I would.
