Any info/advice on successfully Tinting Lexan or Polycarbonate?

Has anyone here sucessfully tinted Lexan/polycarbonate?

I wanted to add some light smoke tint to my Blue Mountain windshield on my F3 SE6, and I'm not finding any good solutions online.

Appreciate any info you can provide!

You might check with Gustafsson, I have a light smoke windshield on my 22F3S and really like it. I don't know if the tint is applied to a clear windshield or bought with a tint from their supplier. They use a high grade acrylic so it would be best if you gave them a call, good luck.

Another option you could try is calling an automotive detailing shop; I have seen them applying various tints to glass windows that are a film precut to size and comes in a wide range of tints. You would have to ask them if the film would adhere properly to the back side of your polycarbonate windshield.

This is on lamonsters website have any of you seen this. I am wondering about the quality. Ever heard of them. Thanks for any insights

Thanks! I saw the windshields sold by Gustasffson... nice :2thumbs:

I like them, but the price is a little steep. The Blue Mtn. windshield assembly has already cost me $450 +shipping/taxes... I haven't convinced myself... yet..... that I need to invest $700 total.

However, looking at their tinted acrylic windshields, it looks as if they were treated chemically or dipped in a tinting solution. It doesn't look like a film was applied.

any tint on windshields is a solid color thru the shield, not a film. thats what my 7Jurock windshields are like

There's a product, tint in a spray can. I don't remember the brand name. I wanted to use this to tint a cut down windshield on my Kawasaki. It didn't go well. The spray can started 'sputtering' and made a mess of my project. I ended up blacking out the entire windshield. Since it was a 'shorty' it worked out.

Honestly, I don't see the point of having a tinted windscreen on a Spyder or bike. I mean, you are looking over it most of the time not through it. In cars it makes sense to help keep the cabin cooler, but on a bike or Spyder, what's the point?

They can look damn cool, that's why.

That's an adjustable windshield.

I talked to a friend that does tint windows for cars and he told me that the tint would not adhere to motorcycle windshields.

Yeah, it's primarily for cosmetics to customize the overall look...

If there were bolt-on mods (not a CPU tune) that actually increased the Rotax 1330 engine performance, I'd be spending money on that instead. ;)

I called a local tint shop. The issue with using window film on Lexan is that Lexan out-gasses and it will cause bubbles in a few days. And the adhesive on window tint will fuse to the Lexan, making it impossible to remove it effectively.

Apparently, there are a few films for Lexan that are porous, which will stop the bubbles forming.

What's your aversion to a proper CPU tune?? :dontknow:

Done properly, a CPU tune/ECU Upgrade can be totally invisible to anyone 'just looking', including any tech working on the Spyder doing normal maintenance or recall work, and probably even to anyone who isn't extremely intimate with the coding & who doesn't actually download & read/compare all the coding & tables pretty much line by line; it's extremely unlikely that it's ever going to be over-written by a software update or anything short of completely replacing the CPU (& even if it is, most good tuners will be able to re-load your upgraded tune for a nominal fee, if any!); and it can range from being as little of a tweak/computer mod as just ironing out a few of the hiccoughs & flat spots in the standard tune; go thru the range of restoring just some or even all of of the 'de-tuned' power & performance that the factory won't let you, a Spyder Owner, access cos they're overly concerned that you might be a geriatric who's unable to handle all that, and it can do all that without impacting in the least on the maintenance schedule &/or reliability of the engine; or it can jump right on thru all that to unleashing some of the REAL power & performance these Rotax engines are actually capable of, if they're ever let loose!! :ohyea:

Admittedly, mine is a V-Twin, so it is more inherently 'exciting' and revvy than the 'torquey but basically lazy' 1330 Triples, but you'd be absolutely astounded at how much more either of these engines/drivelines can and do put out in other platforms, when they aren't so massively de-tuned just for Spyders and their perceived older & more sedate target market!! nojoke - Best money I've ever spent on my Spyder, and the relatively minor additional spend on upgrading the intake airflow & exhaust outlet is something many do in the futile hope of improving the performance of these computer-controlled engines/drivelines anyway, so there's no real loss there....

But I hafta admit that I probably do spend a little more on gas and tires and maintenance items than I would've without doing this ECU Upgrade tho - not thru the need for any 'extra' maintenance or greater wear on anything, but, not that it ever was 'boring' just simply cos I spend a whole lot more time riding now that it's that much more enjoyable, exciting, and downright fun than it was with the stock tune & set-up!! :ohyea:

It's a matter of tastes, I guess. For me, Function over form is the way to go. I guess for some, paying 500 to 700 dollars to look cool makes them happy, but I can find more sensible ways to spend that much money.

I can assure you that I did not spend that much on that tinted windshield. More along the lines of $150. But that's a shorty MC shield and not a Spyder windshield.

Peter,

No aversion to it... I will eventually add more performance to my Spyder. I don't wanna take this thread off topic and get the moderator hammer!!!

:ohyea:

Couldn't agree more Peter. Best money I've spent on my '20 RTL is a tune from Wick-it Performance. Unbelievable how much better it performs. Seems to run so much easier and smoother. The stage 2 tune is the way to go. You'll wonder why it couldn't run like this from the factory.

Can totally agree. An additional question would be if it would prevent/hide the micro cracks that develop?
(It's just a matter of time before some become not so micro.)
