Amsoil

I am thinking of changing the oil that I am using from BRP to Amsoil, but I noticed that Amsoil motorcycle oil comes in 10-40 and the Spyder manual says to use 5-40. Is this a problem? What are this of you using Amsoil doing and will the heavier oil cause any problems?

Thanks for the help

Dan

If you want to use full synthetic then go with a 10 /40 BRP's 5/40 is a blend, I've always used a 10/40 with no bad effects.

Nothing but BRP oil for me. With all of the recent posts about warranty stuff, why take a chance changing from what BRP wants us to use?

Go ahead and use the Amsoil 10W40 full synthetic. It meets or exceeds all the specs and your bike will run smoother for it.

My dealer said for our climate, which is similar to yours, 10-40 is good all year round. I've used nothing but Amsoil for years in my 2-wheelers and now 3. Put it in at the 600 change. If you're gonna change every 3K like the book says, then any Syn motorcycle oil will be fine. Check your local auto stores for Mobil1, Valvoline, etc.
I signed up with Amsoil as a dealer and it costs me $9.10 per quart.
Just changed for the second time and at the next change I intend to send a sample to Blackstone Lab for analysis. Am certain they will certify the oil to still be "good" for another one or two thousand miles; if so, I will run it longer than 3 K. If you've got the proof, BRP can't arbitrarily say the oil caused the prob just because you ran it longer.

I appreciate the advice, I have about 19,000 miles on the Spyder; I change the oil at 3000 miles but would like to extend the interval between changes when I am on a trip. I am hoping Amsoil would allow me to do that.

What Oil ? drive me BATTY

SO after careful research...and the fact that I have used Amsoil in everything I've ever owned and been TOTALLY satisfied...I settled on 10/40 Amsoil for Motorcycles...I also took the "dealership" to get wholesale pricing..and I have a friend that goes to OR once or twice a year...so he picks it up and saves shipping and tax...such a deal...I have noticed that when I switched to Amsoil from BRP I do use a tad (about 1/3 qt) more between changes. I change every 6 k miles...why that number...haven't got a clue...thinking of setting the full oil change at 10k...just to keep it simply for my simply brain...
My tech says Amsoil is a great product...asked him about warranty issues and his feelings are that BRP would be hard pressed to PROVE that an engine/trke issue came from a quality product with tons of data like Amsoil...
My 2cents worth and "what oil to use"...is truly a personal choice...guess that is why we have soooo much choice available...enough already...oil issue choices=s crazy maker in my world :yikes::yikes:

I just got Amsoil 10W40 full synthetic for motorcycles and filters for my RT SE5 from BAJARON, a sponser on this forum. Going to perform my own oil changes now. I let the dealer do the first 600 mile service but I can't see paying my dealer to change oil when I can do it for 1/3 the price and use a superior grade of oil.

Seems like the best oil to use is as hard to identify as the best gasoline to use. In the end, I think it's all up to the individual to decide. I use Royal Purple 10W40 Synthetic automotive oil and change it, with the filter, every 5,000 miles. Why 5,000 miles, it's easier to notice on the odometer. I used the same oil in our old 2008 SE5 for 40,000 miles with no issues. The valves were never adjusted and didn't need adjusting when the tech checked them before reselling the Spyder.
When it comes to warranty, the only thing oil will affect for warranty is the engine. How many riders have had engine related problems due to oil?
On our 7.5 week, almost 14,000 mile trip in 2009 on our SE5, I made the whole trip without changing the oil. Just added oil when needed...2 quarts total. So, I am sold on Royal Purple, as I am on Chevron gasoline to keep the plugs clean, etc. Changed the original plugs on the SE5 at 28,000 miles. Could have probably gone another 20,000 miles.

Preference

I use Amsoil because I think it is a superior product to the OEM semi synthetic. If you are using the OEm oil, just look inside the reservoir after a long ride and the foam will take about a minute to settle down, not like Amsoil!

Dudley, what you say makes a lot of sense to me. With the oil resevoir (sp?) being so handy, I might draw out a sample at 3 or 4K and send it off to Blackstone. They're pretty fast and will email results, so if it comes back "good to go" I'll run it on. Planning a 3K trip mid-Sep so I might well exceed the 3-4K date, but don't think it will hurt a thing. I'm sorta thinking of using the 5K mark for changes, depending on what the test shows.

Amsoil in mt Rt

 I have used Amsoil since 1992 and trust it with every vehicle I have owned, new & used. This past week I actually spoke with the Amsoil techs in Superior Wisconsin. They told me which Amsoil product to use and that it will need to be changed at twice the miles that the manufacturer says. They have not yet made a Amsoil filter....yet. What I will be doing will be to change the filters at 3,000 miles and top off the oil with any lost oil during the change.

Dead Man Rydin.
By the way...
It's HOT!!!!! here in Texas.. Just in case you live elsewhere.

I appreciate all of the information. My real question was not so much about any brand of oil but about switching from the recommended 5-40 to 10-40. I think I am going to make the switch.

Oil choices

On automobiles the laws state that unless a dealer furnishes a particular oil or air filter, etc, that they can only recommend a particular oil or filter be used, I do not know about motorcycle dealers, but the Can Am dealer I do business only uses Amsoil.

5W40 or 10W40

The "W" in the oil designation means Winter not weight. In cold weather the oil thins to a 10 weight and in the hot weather it thickens to a 40 weight. Unless you are running in sub-zero weather, the 10W40 is fine. I have run both the 0W40 and 10W40 AMSOIL products in the Spyder and both work just fine. I run the AMSOIL 20W50 in my Harleys and their gear oils in the transmissions (Not applicable to Spyder.) You can't buy a better synthetic Oil than AMSOIL.
