Amsoil oil change interval

I will be riding to the Spyderfest and the distance will be about 2700 miles one way. I anticipate changing over from BRP syn blend to the Amsoil full syn before the trip.

My question is: with the long interval filter, what is the change interval that you folks are using? I anticipate about 6500 miles before I get back home. I realize the oil filter is now longer but the trans filter is not. I have also heard of some folks just cahnging the filters and topping off the oils to get longer intervals on such a trip. I really want to avoid changing it whaile on the trip.

Now, with all that said, I will be ready fro the 14,000 service when I arrive and have considered getting the service at Pitbull (I really do not want to tie up my bike all day) while there but adding that $700 to the cost of the trip is something my wife would prefer to defer --- if I could comfortably wait until I retuen to Oregon.

Thoughts!!
Opinions??

Thanks

And check with Len. He might do a lot better than $700. In the past I've had service done on Tuesday before the official beginning of Spyderfest.

Oil Change Interval

As an AMSOIL Dealer Direct Jobber I can tell you that the AMSOIL recommendation on oil change interval is 2 X OEM which is 9,200 miles. OEM is 4600 miles with the new longer filter.

Taking off my Official AMSOIL hat and talking to you as a 2011 RT owner, I would have no problem going the whole trip without an oil or filter change. What I would recommend is taking some extra oil along and checking it often as per normal. I would also take along an extra set of filters and only change them should you encounter any oil pressure related codes. (Highly unlikely) I believe both Lamont and Ron have gone much longer than that with no problems.

For you info should you need oil on the road, go to amsoil.com and on the upper r/h corner of the home page is a dealer locator that covers the whole US.

Have a great trip.

The trans filter is the one that was made longer...not the engine oil filter. That filter was merely reinforced. You should have no problems if you change shortly before your trip and again shortly thereafter. Just take some oil along in case you have to top it off along the way.

There has been no change to the engine oil filter dimensions. BRP simply put screen/mesh material on the inside and outside of that filter. The latest transmission oil filter is longer than the original but the same diameter.

I did 6,400 miles on Amsoil last year to the Owner's even, then to California and back to East Tennessee. I had the oil tested and it was still well within spec. If it were me I'd take a quart of Amsoil to top off with and ride without any worries.

I can't speak for Len and crew, and I am sure they will have plenty of work. But I would be surprised if they had your Spyder tied up all day. If you wanted him to do the work I'd certainly contact him and ask.

See you there!

OIL AND FILTER CHANGES

If the ROTAX engine in the Spyder can't go 6500 miles between changes then it's a piece of *rap and made of shoddy materials......HOWEVER I don't believe this is the case and wouldn't worry about it......It really is fairly BULLETPROOF it's the computers that cause all the headaches.....Mike ...

No major disagreement with any of the above as I don't pretend to be an expert on oils. I am sorta anal about changing my own oil and running the best quality I can afford and for me thats Amsoil. Heres what I've been doing with mine since 600 miles when I started doing my own:

I've run lab tests at 3000 or 4000 miles on Amsoil and and in one instance, Valvoline motorcycle oil. Amsoil held up slightly better than Valvoline; however, all showed considerable shearing with the viscosity dropping down into the 30 weight level or lower. I'm not knowledgable enough to say thats harmful in any way, but it does suggest that the transmission on these critters shears the oil significantly.

Or maybe its something peculiar about my machine that wears on the oil the way it does, althought its not shown any unusual wear components such as iron, aluminum, etc in the tests. What would definitely work better is a heavier weight oil but since thats not called for by BRP I'm not recommending it to anyone. However, running an oil thats down to 20+ weight makes me nervous. I'd like to hear BRP's take on that. For all I know its perfectly fine.

If my oil is not ready for a change when I get ready to head out to Ozark, Mo which will be about 2500 mi round trip, I'll tuck my quart of Amsoil 20W-50 in my bag for topping off when needed. That little bit of heavier weight will bring the viscosity of the 10W-40 back up some as it shears down into the low 20 to 30 weight level as it will when the miles increase. Buts thats just me; each person has to decide for himself.:)

You could look at it this way...
Changing the oil Mid-Trip could be a lot cheaper than if something goes wrong trying to stretch it too far...:yikes:
