ALL 2013 Spyders recalled

Navy Warrant

New member
Did I hear correctly today? All 2013's have been recalled because of plastic melting causing brake fluid to leak and cause a fire? I received an email notice from BRP via my local power sports dealer. Dealers will install a heat shield.
:yikes:

I've heard the talk about it happening in Canada, this might be the first I heard in the US, especially since you got an actual email.

well your the first to get a recall in the states than because the notice was only for canada. http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/...Canada-safety-recall-on-2013-Spyder-RT-and-ST

The recall is already in effect in Canada, and is about to be in the US according to the notice. Here's the notice with Q&A:

[h=5]Can-Am Spyder[/h]on Friday

Dear Can-Am Spyder roadster owners,

As some of you might already know today Transport Canada published a recall notification from BRP on all 2013 Can-Am® Spyder® RT and ST series roadsters.

BRP has proposed a solution to the issue raised by the recall; this recall notification has been approved for affected vehicles within Canada by Transport Canada. Agencies in other countries are also reviewing the solution for their own jurisdictions, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States.

All of the details on the issue, the recall and the solution are being communicated to BRP's Canadian dealers as well as to all Canadian owners of a vehicle that is affected by Transport Canada's. As soon as we have the green light from agencies in other countries, we will release the same information to the dealer network and owners of affected vehicles within those countries, including NHTSA in the United States.

Following are some additional details regarding the recall:

What issue does this recall address?
Under some riding conditions, the tandem master cylinder manifold inlet may melt and cause brake fluid to drip onto a heat source, which may lead to a vehicle fire.

How will the recall address this issue?
To correct this condition, dealers will install BRP-tested, specially-designed heat shields and heat deflector to reduce the heat in the general area of the tandem master cylinder manifold inlet and prevent it from melting.

Should I continue to ride my 2013 Can-Am Spyder RT or ST until the safety recall is performed on my vehicle?
As you are now aware of the details of this safety recall, give yourself enough time to react and contact your dealer at your earliest convenience.

Should I contact my Can-Am Spyder dealer for full details of this recall?
In Canada, our dealer network is being fully briefed on this safety recall. In other countries, we cannot release full details to our dealer network until the regulatory procedures with their respective agencies are completed. As soon as BRP is able to do so, our dealer networks in those countries will be fully briefed on this safety recall.

In the meantime, if you have more questions, in Canada, consumers can contact their BRP authorized dealer. In the U.S., you may contact BRP directly by calling us at 1-888-638-5397 (U.S. & Canada only) from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern time Monday to Thursday, and 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern time Friday. For other countries, please contact BRP at:

We apologize for any inconvenience and we will keep you informed.

With all this talk of different heat issues, I'm going tomorrow to find me a small extinguisher to put in the bike. :sour:

Your dealer is jumping the gun. This recall is for Canada only at this time. It applies to the RT and ST models. Other countries will follow as soon as the recalls are approved by the appropriate regulatory agencies. BRP has announced that here on the forum. In the US owners should be notified by letter, in accordance with the law. US dealers are not equipped to make the repairs as yet. Patience, Grasshopper. :)

Who is your dealer?

I sent an email to my dealer (Lake Norman PowerSports in Cornelius, NC) asking if my Spyder had any recalls. They indicated that "Yes, there will be a recall. It will be by VIN number so as soon as they release it we will let you know. They said that hopefully we will have a answer nest week.". Just wondering if you have the same dealer.

I'm not sure how that's going to help. Any fire that starts will be under the tupperware and virtually impossible to get to before it's too late.

@nancystoy, my dealer called me today to inform me that my 2013 STLimited had been placed on the safety recall. Parts are ordered and I need to bring bike into dealership for repairs.

...Not having read all of the communication regarding this just yet :opps:; Could it be that bRP is alerting the U.S. dealers as well? :dontknow:
After all; if Canada has pulled the pin on this one, how much will NHTSA lag behind?

The notice states that governing agencies from other countries are currently reviewing the suggested mod... Shouldn't be long...

That's why I'm thinking that this is kind of a pre-emptive notification... They know what's coming, and are setting things in place for the inevitable.

The "official" recall for US :spyder2: should be on the horizon as soon as the US government approves the recall.

Waiting is hard if you are one of the 2013 owners. I recommend a little more patience until everything is official and the dealers have a chance to get the "fix" parts in stock, and then get the work done as specified. Time will also tell, if this fix is the "answer" to the heating problems that have been reported.

If its anything like the DPS fixes that went on a couple years back--its all going to take some time.

Unfortunately, this is not something that is going to be solved in a day or two.

My concern is what are they hoping to do? I know of one bike that has had the heat shielding done as well as master cylinder changed and is still having same heat issues. My brake switches went bad and all they did was to replace them. Nothing on the bike was changed. I still have heat issues and am waiting for something else to melt. Wish they could figure way to vent heat out to prevent this from happening. Will take mine in for recall and have work done but really wonder what end plan is. I have a bike I don't trust riding to work much less across states. Not bad for a 25,000 investment. Will keep fingers crossed.

You 2013 pilots are just going to have to wait and see what BRP has devised as a solution...
There's been a whole lot of "backuard engineering and brainstorming" going on; let's all still hope that they can do even better! :2thumbs:

Could you tell me if you feel that the heat melted your switch? My switch was also bad, but it was not right from day one. It started staying on sporadically and then constantly. I didn't think it was related to heat.

I bought my bike in Feb. went to Spyderfest in Missouri and had no issues with heat. I ad the recall for alignment and ball joints due to excessive weaving but bike ran normal temp wise. Once it hit summer here in Houston things started to go weird on bike. Started getting limp modes back to back reading high temps. About three days after went on night ride to see if cooler night temps would make a difference. Bike left me twice with VSS codes. That was it, switches were fried. Not sure if just coincidence or from the heat. Am sure that Spyders do like hotter climates, at least 2013's or more specifically mine. Problem is our summer last nine months here. Wondering what else has been compromised or weakened due to heat issues under the Tupperware.

In the meantime, all Spyder owners are banned from operating their vehicles in the far western United States for fear of creating additional forest fires. Please stay out of Yosemite National Park for instance.

I think this happened to me today...

Coming home from a 60 mile ride, I was almost to my house and started to smell something. I pulled into my driveway and realized there was smoke coming out from under the handlebars. I shut the spyder off and looked underneath and there was fluid dripping. There was a lot of white smoke billowing from every opening. I let it cool down for about an hour, then started it to pull it in the garage and almost immediately it started smoking again!

Also, the LCD read 'break failure'.

I guess I'll be contacting the dealership on Tues.
