Aftermarket exhaust

I think it was back in late summer of 2009 when the first dps recall was addressed with a reflash of the ECM d/t complaints of problems with the steering. After the reflash there were some with mods that complained of perfromance issues. It was after that, I believe, that BRP addressed the performance issue with another reflash. This is from memory b/c I never had a spyder performace issue d/t no performance mods.

I think also around the same time frame is when there was a bulletin issued with a s/n break for the vent hose. I'm not sure if the perfromance reflash of the ECM is on that bulletin. In one of my previous posts I mentioned the bulletin number for the vent hose. I'm off to work now, so I won't be able to look for it.

Here it is: It is actually called a 'Quality Bulletin' and the number is 2009-4. This bulletin includes the vent hose. But, I remember the dealer saying it had over 30 pages; so, something else is included in it besides the vent hose. I hope this helps and I don't just have you chasing your tail. If it doesn't, sorry.
Oh, where are my manners. Welcome aboard nanaskids!

Many thanks, this is great information. I'm pretty sure that one got done but I'll double check with the guys in the shop. And I forgot to say WELCOME to nanaskids too!

:welcome: and congrats on your Spyder! :2thumbs:

I don't think it sounds very ATVish, wish it was slightly deeper tone, but still love how she sounds...

Totally understand that. I should clarify... All of our ATV's are tricked out 4-strokes and have far more power than stock. We also buy the new headers and power kits. This completely changes the sound. Just like going from one Two Brothers can to two. Night and day different in sound.

I am just saying to us... That is what it sounds like. HMF makes very good exhaust, and Yosh reminds me a lot like Sony... They have excellent products, but you pay for their name. I think the HMF product is a better value.

And to be brutally honest. Anything other than the factory sound is better! :shemademe_smilie::roflblack::ohyea:

There is no ECM update required with the Hindle.

Yes there is. It's the second update for bikes with Hindles. My bike was stuttering/surging and called the dealer. Asked if I had a Hindle told me to stop by for a reflash. Worked perfect ever since.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you will, as the HMF can is much less restrictive as opposed to the Hindle. But not to worry; the O2 Modifier is a snap to put in. I think you'll enjoy the new can much more.

The Hindle is a decent can but I would not put another one on. I'm weighing options for a replacement.

I just bought the HMF carbon for my wifes phantom. I'm sure it will be loud.

Well, luckily mine came with the yosh, so I didnt have to pay for it
If it came down to me having to fork out the money or my exhaust, I am not sure what I would have put in, but I would have shopped around for a while before making a decision.

Wow, Justin, that is sweet! Great pic. :2thumbs: It sure seems like we have more and more really good options out there now for our Spyders than even a year ago. It could be that I was just unaware that all of these great pieces were out there, being a Spyder rookie and all.

I'm going to have to think hard about this now!! :yikes: But this is not a bad thing at all!

UPDATE: These great pieces WERE out there last year. The thread that Pastor Chuck referred to is a really good one. My memory needs work! :roflblack:

All I know is when my Hindle is finished, I'm going for the 2 Bros duals. Those things sound awesome.

I bought Doc's Hindle last year...Love it. I do like the look of the 2 Brothers dual though, maybe.
(Doc's Hindle is used to high RPMs:roflblack:)

The 02 mod was my best bang for the buck, removed the lean mid range surge, much crisper low-mid range, should even run a little cooler with more fuel, it did seem to be a little thirstier, probably me twisting the throttle, but the increased drivability is well worth it to me. For those that have had their steering box changed, it was my understanding that both updates get flashed as soon as it's hooked up to BUDs, whether you want them or not.

In addition to the new DPS you get two updates? What are they?

I'm assuming you are talking about the DPS recall of Sept. 7, 2010.

I purchased a Tailgunner exhaust, the turbine style one. OMG, is this thing loud... fired it up and took it for a ride. WOWZA. Louder than both my Harley Davidson bikes with aftermarket exhaust. As if I didnt get enough attention from the people in town, now they can hear me a quarter mile away.

Tailgunner exhaust cans are very salty, but I love having something so unique. Well worth the price I paid!!!

Interested in the O2 modifier though. I am only running just the can. I have a HUGE power boost all around, but I know with some sort of tuner and an high flow air filter it would run much better.

Where can I go to look at these O2 modifiers you all are talking about. I have powercommanders on my harleys along with K&N air filters.

No. You are confusing a service issue with what we are discussing. Adding any aftermarket pipe does not require an ECM update. The computer remaps to the new pipe automatically.

Yes, many, not all had issues after BRP issued one update. Another update was released that corrected the issue which was more prevalent on bikes with aftermarket pipes.... That was a long time ago, and I might be a bit foggy on every detail, but again, in normal behavior, a Spyder does not require the ECM to be flashed with a new exhaust install.

No, you are not foggy. That's what I was trying to say. But, look at Capt. Jim's post that I responded to. Do you have any idea what he may be talking about. I think it's post #30.

Again, Gentlemen, it is "Help the old guy" time. I read many have after market mufflers and some have Juice Boxes and other's "an o2 sensor".

I note the o2 sensor is $70+/- and the JB is $260 +. I kinda know what each does, but not sure which would be the better investment. I am more interested in performance than dollars.

I ride with a bunch of old time riders of every make and model. We can be agressive at times and I love to lean on the gas at times. I ordered a RT-S SE5, but am having second thoughts.

We often ride the hill country twisies and rowing through the gears is a must and ya gotta do it quickly at times...not sure the SE5 (or I) can react quick enough.

Talked to my dealer who said to ride our two demo's again and we will get whatever you wish. I rode the SE5, but not the SM5...I will this week.

The dealer also sells the 2Bros muffler and Juice Box or o2...I will get one of these, but wonder if I should do it on delivery or ride it the 600 miles and then do it....hey, maybe I won't need the muffler (but will get it for the sound, and hopefully added performance) and JB or o2. I have Cobras on my trike and love them....

Okay, help the old guy.

The SE will shift faster than an SM. I suspect your thumb is quicker than your foot and hands, too. At any rate, it doesn't have to travel as far...or coordinate with anything else. I would ride first, and then decide if you need a boost later. The performance improvements for things like this are somewhat limited, anyway, so it's not like you would be adding 20 horses. IMO, don't put the cart before the horse. :D

Scotty, one of my concerns is the shifting problems some have had with the SE5. I admit, I did not wring out the demo on the ride. I was getting used to it and took it slow and easy...I did run up to 80 on the Interstate with no problem but did not speed shift through the gears. I will ride both when I go down to the dealer later this week. I note you have a SM5 on order.... Thanks for your input. I value it.

I agree with Scotty...

My wife and I are (Had been) Diehard manual shifting folks. After a day of city driving the SE5 I can say without much doubt that the SE5 flat out performs the Manual...

We will not ever order a Manual shift model on a Spyder as long as the SE5 is an option.

Case in point. The RT's throttle is a fly by wires system not cable. So the computer controls the RPMs as you drive regardless of where you have the throttle positioned at the time of the shift request. As we drive in a "Spirited" manner, the engine responds rapidly and we have far more fun shifting with the SE5 as a result.

I mean this respectfully... Sometimes we over think or analyze stuff when we do not have the ability to be driving the item in question. I whole heartily agree that you need to put a few "Spirited" miles on both models while playing with your "Reaction" times. I am willing to bet that if you give both a good fair workout that you will find the SE5 edges out the manual shift in the fun factor. To us it allowed the RPMS to respond faster on the SE5 and we end up having more fun because of it.

Not to mention at the tail end of a long "Spirited" ryde... We are not as fatigued as we had become accustomed to.

Keep in mind I went into this SE5 idea kicking and screaming in protest. But with my wife's disability we had to buy what would allow us both to ryde for as long as possible and still enjoy the ryde... :2thumbs::doorag:

Good luck in your search!

P.S. I forgot... Normally I would go the 600 miles first completely stock before tossing any aftermarket items on a ryde. This way you know what is actually happening (If something goes wrong) if anything during your first 600 miles.
