• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

A thread about a Spyder that really did overheat... your thoughts please...

This happened to one of the spyders at the Phelen Phun days parade last month. It turned out to be the plastic manifold where all the hoses run to on the back right side of the engine. I think it is the thermostat housing.

No. The piece that blew was farther back on the engine, and hade more hoses running to it. On the parts catalog online it is called a connector. I did not see the part #.

The hoses run from the themostat to the connector then to the engine on the other side.

ok the part # i got is 709200151. This is for the connector that blew our on the spyder in the parade. From what you describe, it was the same event. Sudden and rapid coolant loss, with white smoke coming out from the right side. I was right behind that spyder and when I saw the white smoke I started looking for the fire trucks that had gone in front of all the spyders.

We got that spyder off the road, pulled the pannels off the right side, filled the coolant bottle and all the water went right out at the connector.

Thank you for the information. I have passed this along to the dealer to order that part. Probably couldn't hurt to replace the thermostat as well.

The picture i see is the thermostat housing.:dontknow:

It is, that is where I saw all the coolant collected, but I acutally didn't see where the coolant "exploded" from. I'll be testing that tonight.

Did you see where coolant was escaping from Cap or Overflow would indicate a bad thermostat or did coolant bottle split both easy fixes...

Freebob....:doorag:

The coolant bottle is intact.

Thanks all.

The pic is the thermostat housing.
I had (on seperate occassions), both the thermostat housiing explode, and the connector sprang a leak. The thermostat housing put my bike into limp mode and overheated, the connector just leaked pretty good, but I was able to keep adding coolant until I got it fixed.

The thermostat housing is lower and more in front...like the pic, and the connector is further back and almost on the motor, also has hoses going to it...1 small and 4 larger hoses.

Might as well order both and get you a bottle while you are at it, lol

Check the connector - it is rubber and split in two on the top of it - the white smoke was coolant on a hot engine. the bike was my GS

Spydergirl sounds like a crazy day indeed. I'm sure your dealer will getting it figured out. Fingers crossed for you and good luck!

Let us know the outcome, please.
Cheers, and all the best from Newfoundland!

PS Glad you didn't get any of that VERY HOT fluid on you!

So I got a chance to tear her down today and investigate. Seems that there was a very loose hose clamp connection just above the thermostat. I am going to replace the thermostat, the clamps, and probably at least one of the hoses. The leak did not appear to be at the inlet/outlet connector.

I also decided that I DO NOT want to put that stupid airbox in there. What are my alternatives???

The Kewlmetal intake is the one I have, http://www.kewlmetalstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=5_43&products_id=401 You will hear intake noise so you should listen to someone that has this setup but I like the sound and all the space around the engine it gives you and it is a 4 bolt design unlike some others.

There are currently two options-- the Kewlmetal intake and the www.evoluzione.net unit.

Both will add considerable noise to your ryde... I have the Evo unit an easily removable box around it to help quiet things down.

Both sound good to me. Any issues with having the oil from the crankcase blow-by going directly into the throttle bodies?

I couldn't find the Evo filter system. I do like the look of the KewlMetal one, but $250 was a little more than I was looking to spend. I guess this will have to wait.

I have the KewlMetal one, which I installed to get rid of the oil blow-by in the airbox, and also to gain access to the front spark-plug and upper engine area.

Additionally, it comes with a reusable round K&N filter element.

No problem or smoking by having the oil going into the throttle bodies. It is a little noisy, but if it is coupled with the Hindle growl, it sounds great. :D

Can't recall the other brand that manufacture these arrangements, but it is not Evoluzione.

All I remember is that it was more expensive than the KM, and had a red foam filter element shaped like a dome, with the same arrangement for the oil blow-by into the throttle bodies.

Saludos, Pilo

Strange--- the Evo unit is no longer listed on their site. I know I tried to order an extra foam filter the other day and was told they were on backorder-- so maybe that is why they took it down. I can't offhand recall what the price was since I ordered a bunch of stuff at once-- but it was in a similar ballpark as the Kewlmetal unit...

As far as the oil blow-by going into the throttle bodies--- that is how this bike was setup to work from the factory--- so no problem there--- or you could still use an oil-catch setup if you wanted.

I feel your pain on the stupid airbox---- I hated that thing!

That airbox is ridiculously too big. I'm done with dealing with it. I'm seriously looking at that KM setup and might bite the bullet and make the change. I'll just put the green filter in mine into the hubby's.

That KM setup should sound awesome with the Hindle. :2thumbs:

If RSshrimp wants to give out his secret, he has a truly awesome Airbox setup he designed, that looks fairly easy to do; while at the same time reduces the excess noise along with taking care of the other issues or concerns mentioned. Maybe he will see this and post up some pics :-)

I'm just waiting for his invite so that I can head over to his location and he will install it for me..heheh!
