Hi guys -
A couple of questions for those of you who have been Spydering for a while.
I was looking at the 2014 RT which does not have enough of a jump up to merit trading in my 2013 but it did trigger some questions. I am very reluctant to dole out $500 - 800 for a set of Elkas. That is not a run down of Elka or their products - more a reflection on the ratio of my riding preferences to cost.
I have been looking for a suitable coil over shock that could be substituted for the OEM shocks on the 2013. My presumption is that BRP did not engineer an entirely new shock but 'tweaked' the specs on some product already available from Sachs/ZF. I have googled every number I could find on my shocks to see if I could get a cross reference to compare with. No luck.
I really do not want to go through the gyrations of removing a shock/coil to measure shock length, stroke, coil length, etc. Has someone already measured the 2013 RT shocks and have those specifications?
I spent the weekend thrashing about the Georgia Mountains to help me get used to the lean etc which was making me uneasy. it was both more educating and more fun than doing the parking lot drills!
And the Bajaron sway bar was just dandy. It was a great confidence builder - I am not sure i was much slower than I am in my Corvette with the Z51 package. (that is probably not true but the Spyder makes you think you are going faster LOL)
I am satisfied for my riding style with the springs but perhaps a bit more shock damping. i was able to move along quite well in the twisties and never bottomed out once. I weight 100 kilos LOL so I am not a lightweight.
Second question - it does not seem that BRP made any major changes (other than powertrain, VSS) on the new RT's - no mention of suspension geometry changes etc. They are saying the beefed up the shocks with bigger pistons and more dampening.
So question is were there any other suspension changes that would prohibit using 2014 shocks? Will the 2014 RT shocks fit the 2013? Buying a couple of shocks at $80@bucks plus collars etc comes out under $200 - that is doable for me. Comments anyone?
The other upgrade was to new VSS parameters. I presume this would be just a re-program with BUDS to retrofit to earlier models? Can anyone confirm? That would be an awesome 'retrofit' upgrade. Think BRP would buy into that?
Thanks in advance!
