I am hoping I can get a correct answer on how to check oil level. I purchased a brand new spyder and my brother (already owns a spyder) checked and dipstick shows overfilled. We read manual and followed proceedure. I called dealer and was told, check oil cold, then start, run to temp, turn off wait 30 seconds and then test again. Manual does not state check cold first ???????? Any help, please and thank you.

I think that if you check it cold you will not see any oil on the dipstick so I don't know why they would tell you to do that.

COLD/HOT.... maybe i'm nutz, but i've checked it both ways many times, and it's about the same, within 1/8" either way.... hint; carry a quart with you when you ride... always good to be on the safe side...

I think I would find another dealer! nojoke The oil is to be checked at normal engine operating temperature. There is a bold notice to this effect in your Owners' Guide, along with the correct checking procedure. BTW, "normal operating temperature" means the oil temperature, not just the water temp. best time is after a ride. Also remember that the dipstick is to be screwed all the way in, unlike most other motorcycles.

PAIN IN THE DIPSTICK

I don't know why it's such a hassle, but seems like whenever I check it, there is no defining level line on dipstick. It's either splattered all over the stick or nothing. I do as the Manuel says, at least 4/5 bars on temp, turn off, turn back on for thirty seconds. Have added oil a few times just because, not because I can actually see a line. So, it's at dealer now, dealing with throttle body issue and doing a service, so I guess I'll check it after ride home from dealer to see how it reads after their oil change.

Remember that you run the engine for at least thirty seconds...then turn it back off. Check within a minute or so or running the engine. Sounds like you are checking it while running.

Your right it sounds like that, sorry, I do turn it off after the 30 seconds

heres how i do it take a 5 mile ride come home take off the oil panel,start let it run for 30 t0 45 seconds check oil ,works for me dont over fill or it will go int your air box.then ride and have fun.:chat::2thumbs:

There should be a distinct line on the stick. There may be bubbles if you check too soon with some oils. it doesn't hurt to wait nearly a minute. You also need to screw in the dipstick all the way. If you are doing everything right, and still don't see oil on the stick, something is wrong...too little oil, leaking check valve into the engine, or a mistake in your technique somehow, for instance. The dealer should be able to double check your level and your technique.

I think the 30 seconds part is throwing many off,
Run it till the engine is at FULL operating temperature, Then before you shut it off, Make sure it's at an idle for at least 30 seconds, In other words if you were revving the engine to warm it up or just coming off a ride, it has to sit idling 30 seconds at least before shutting it off.
