2011 Limited - Heat Problems

Is anyone else having problems with heat on this model? When I ryde as the passenger my right foot is on fire fairly quickly, as the driver it takes a little longer but still very hot. I can’t ryde without wearing socks with my shoes. ( I know proper riding gear needed) It is also worse on short runs around town, which is expected versus long runs I would think. It’s been ranging from 90 – 100 degrees here most days. I ryde the Spyder to work every day and it would be nice if I could wear my dress shoes and not have to change shoes. ( I know, I know) :sour:

I have looked at the Air Management Systems and CAT Shields at Spyderpops but not sure if it will help or work on my ryde since they are for the GS/RS. :dontknow:

I’m new to the open air world and the Spyder is my first ryde so I may just be a wimp. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Oh yea, I’ve been looking around at different seats as well, something that isn’t so hot when riding. I’m tired of looking like I didn’t stop to potty when I get off the Spyder because of sweating. :opps: It’s kind of embarrassing when everyone is watching you pull up and when you step off the bike and turn around your pants are wet…. :opps: Also a pain to carry extra clothing along with the extra shoes to work every day.

:helpsmilie:Any feedback other than to stop whining would be great! :roflblack::roflblack:

You need to be wearing boots while riding but if you're not willing to do that you need socks for sure.

As far as the seat goes you may want to try the beaded seat covers, that will let a little air flow between you and the seat.

SpyderPops does make a heat shield for the CAT of the RT.

Available in both semi-automatic and standard shift versions.
Simple installation that takes only minutes!
Black polycarbonate with the hat shielding on the back side.

SPY110 - $40.00 pr. (semi-automatic) + $12.50 shipping/handling in Continental U.S., Canada/Mexico $27.00, All other countries $44.00

Spyderpops sells the shield for the RT also, SPY111 ....just go farther down in his ad.

Thanks Guys,

Getting ready to add Seal floorboards also, so, do I need the Air Management System?

BTW - Looking at riding boots now. :opps:

Smart move, and not just because of the heat.
And to answer your question about riding in the open air, All Spyders and Motorcycle's ride hot [throw heat, part of the experience] And also remember a lot of that heat is radiating up from the hot pavement, you don't get that when your riding in a car.

Buy the SpyderPops radiator block off plate. It does exactly what it says it will do and it does not cause the RT to run hotter. It is a GREAT mod!!!!

I ordered the Alaska Leather Sheepskin Covers today. I found a promocode online, "Deadsheep" will get you 10% off!!

Cat shields

I had read all the blogs on here about heat so I ordered the cat heat shields from Spyder Pops before my bike ever arrived. I rode the bike home and then took the little bride for about a 20 mile ride. This was with out the shields. That night I installed the shields and we rode to work the next day. The difference was huge. That week end we rode from Birmingham, AL to Baton Rouge, LA and back with no problems.

I ordered it today and it has already been shipped.

I have a 2011 RTS and find I get a lot of heat coming up from under the front of the seat. Raise the seat and everything is very hot under there. Especially around the gas filler area and the metal backbone. All this heat coming up around the seat front and also the from the seat itself makes for a uncomfortable ride. If I could get that area cooled off it would be great.
The hot air from the radiator vent doesn't seem to be bothering me as most air seems to be directed well outwards. Anyone have this issue and is there a practical solution? Spyderpops doesn't seem to have anything helpfull

I have a question. Why do some 2011 RT Limited owners seem to have trouble with the heat and some don't? I don't have a huge problem with the heat but I thought it was because BRP had fixed the problem for 2011? :dontknow: Now I see others with the 2011 RT Limited still have heat problems. How come some do and some don't?! :dontknow:

It probably has to do with how hot your summers are, the ambient heat coming up from the tarmac is a big player in your comfort when you are out riding the Spyder, as is air temperature, of course. Too much heat is something we don't often see in the UK, we are in the middle of summer right now and if the temperature climbs to 70 we call that a warm day, light the barbeque and eat outdoors!

I think it has something to do with a person's size and posture, too. I have no natural caboose, and am relatively thin. I don't come anywhere near the front of the seat. I can feel heat there with my hand, but my body isn't in the line of fire. I think it also has a lot to do with what a person wears. I wear heavy jeans and often a pair of mesh or textile overpants, so I am well insulated. Also, some people tend to sit farther forward, or hug the "tank" with their knees more than others. All these factors will affect how much heat a person feels in the seat area, in addition to climatic factors.

I believe there's one other potential... a lot of Spyder ryders are first-time ryders who are not used to engine heat. Cars/trucks keep the heat out of the passenger compartment... Spyders and motorcycles do not.

Ride a Valkyrie if you want a "hot" ride! :ohyea:

i know in my case this is 100% correct. I wear ATGATT so that in itself is a major thing to get used to. Heat coming off the spyder was def. not expected either. Hopefully that heat helps out in Oct & nov:dontknow:

Myself I've never been as hot on any of my motorcyles (except from the sun or humidity) as I get on the RTS.
I think the big differance is the motorcycle's engine normally is fully exposed to the air allowing it to disapate heat easier whereas the RTS is enclosed. I also think the catalitic converter is under the driver and it heats the metal parts above it. I would like to fabricate a heatshield above it to see if that would help but don't have the resourses to do it.

Although I am a first time rider my husband is not. He also said the RT is hotter than any other motorcycle he has ridden. I gave the same explanation as you, enclosed motor. I do ride 4 wheelers on long rides so I understand "normal" heat coming from the motor. This ain't normal.
I ran across a thread and someone was talking about a "sealing the seat" I'm going to try and find it again.

Trying to decide, heat and airflow mods

I am trying to decide which of the heat airflow products to get from spyderpops for my 2011 RTS. I only want to take it apart once. But I getting tired of scorched ankles.

Back in July I stopped by Autozone and bought a roll of 2" exhaust wrap. I removed the panels on both side of my spyder to gain access to both pipes. I measured how much wrap I needed then cut off a couple of extra feet.Taking my time I wrapped both pipes right to the catalilic converter and held it all together with stainless steel wire every 4 or so inches. Some areas are hard to get to but if you take your time you will develope a system to make a nice wrap.
I can't tell you how much of a differance this has made. The whole gas tank area is now so much cooler as is the seat making for a now a much more comfortable ride. Did a friends also with the same results.

This was my favorite bike before I got my Spyder. This bike was a lot hotter to ride than the RT.

Lots of power, lots of class but lots of heat.
