• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. 12k mile service?

Hi guys!

Hope you all enjoyed Summer and are ready for this last Indian summer blast to push through! On it's heels is looking to be a glorious North front hitting the Midwest this week!!

I'm bringing my 2012 RSS in today to have the rear tire changed. It's the original tire and it's time. How many miles have you all gotten out of your tires? From my research on this thread I believe it's a Kenda tire on my spyder. I now have 13,500 miles on the bike since getting it when it only had 1,919 miles in 2014! Is this good lifespan for these tires? I rarely burn out.

Also, need to have my exhaust repacked because I don't have a power commander, and with the two brothers cat delete exhaust she runs hot. Any recommendations on the power commanders? Considering adding one, but I do love the decel pop and backfires.

But lastly, and the main point of this post, is that I seem to remember a ~12k mile service being recommended. What is included in that service? Any thoughts or real life experiences regarding this service interval would be very appreciated.

The reason I ask and just don't blindly do it, whatever it entails, is because there was also a recommended 6k mile service which much of the stuff wasn't truly needed, just precautionary if I remember right.

Please advise, I'm open to any comments! Going to book appt for this week based on your advice and recommendations.

Thanks SL!!!

For my 2012 RS, 12,000 mile service includes:
- Replace air filter
- Check bearing seals on real axle
- Replace brake fluid
- Replace coolant
- Pressure test cooling system
- Check/replace front gaskets on exhaust Y pipe
- Check front suspension A-Arms & ball joints
- Check real axle bearings
- Check rear sprocket bearing
- Check shock absorbers
- Replace spark plugs
- Rotate front tires

Front tires are directional and would need to have the rims changed. Rotation will not give much additional miles. Most get 20K plus miles on the fronts with no rotation.

Spark plugs should be good to at least 30,000 miles. They are a bear to remove and replace. Labor is going to jump the price up for those.

That said--at 12,000 on the 998--it is oil change/filter, check fluids, go over the standard oil change service checklist. Add any other tweeks you want such as rear tire and muffler check. I have never done muffler service of any kind at 12,000.

Don't let them talk you into a valve check service--recommended at 14,000 on the 998's. They don't need it and they cost an additional $800 in labor. I have bought and paid for two--on one bike at 14,000 and another at 28,000--both needed nothing. I am letting the 2011 go to 50,000 and I will "think" about it.

An oil change service will cost about $350. Double that when adding the rear tire and some additional things.
