12 Volt outlet in the trunk - what do you use it for?

Hi there. I talked with my dealer and he said, on delivery on my RS 2010 SM5, he would install the 12 Volt outlet for free. I said ok.

For those of you who have the 12 Volt Outlet in the trunk; what do you use it for?????:dontknow:

As per the manual, I see that both switched and unswitched accessory circuits use only a 3amp fuse in the from fuse box.

It does not seem like you could run a lot off that outlet, for example how about a 12V hand-held car vacuum???

What do you use yours for?

Thanks in advance for replies on this topic.
Cheers.

Nothing. After I had it for a short time, I decided that I really needed outlets that were up on the dash for me to use them like I want. I installed two Powerlet sockets right below the gauges and they are fed by an Evoluzione PowerBus.

I use mine for my portable air compressor from sears to check my tires and inflate them as the bike is idling in pre flight.

Thanks for the reply.

Did you uninstall the 12Volt outlet in the trunk - is the outlet cap still in the trunk - or did you remove it and cover the hole with something?

The sockets you installed below the gauges ( nice idea by the way ); are they running off the 3amp 'accessory circuits' in the front fuse box?

I'm wondering what kind of accessories can run those three amp circuits.

thanks.

The BRP outlet is still in the trunk on the off chance that I may need to use for for something. Also, I don't have to worry about plugging the hole if I don't remove it. I think my wife has used hers a few times for charging a phone or a two-way radio while riding.

The PowerBus uses the BRP switched accessory circuit to turn on it's own 12 volt, 30 amp source from the battery. This thread gives most, if not all, of the details of our Powerlet / PowerBus install. http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5171

I have one in the trunk and I use it to charge my iphone...being the phone uses bluetooth to connect to the zumo 550, it doesn't really need to be on me...

I like that it is there if I need anything charged...having some on the dash would be great, but I don't have a need to charge much...just the iphone, on occasion...

Thanks for your note. By the look of things and the 3amp spec, I think the 12Volt Outlet is used for things like phone chargers, gps chargers, but not able to handle, or designed to be powering things like compressors or vacuums.

So, what other small device or gadget can be plugged in the 12V outlet in the trunk?

thanks, everyone.

I too have mine on the dash. If my phone needs charging, I put it in the trunk and just have the phone charger reaching in there. I also use it for GPS or to charge the scala rider or ipod.

Ditto...except that I made my own auxiliary fuse panel. We have never used the 12V in the trunk once. We do have a plug-in trouble light in the trunk, but haven't needed it. Some small compressors will run off 3 amps, but check the current draw specs. You can plug in a cord and snakle it up to a GPS or something, although for that purpose I prefer my dash outlets. Not practical for charging a cell phone, unless you are riding, or hook the outlet up to the unswitched power connector. I don't recommend riding with a cell phone tucked away on the motorcycle. If you crash and come off, you can't call for help sometimes. Keep it in your pocket.

If you crash, you might not have the faculties to make a phone call anyway...if it's in your pocket, you might be worse off than having it padded in the trunk. I think there are pros and cons to each...most importantly, don't crash!

I have only used mine to charge my Crackberry while ryding on trips. I would not answer the phone while ryding anyway, so it might as well be in the cargo hold. :)

I am sure I will also use it to charge my GPS sometime later when I actually need to use it. I also have one of those small air compressors, but never thought about using it as I have a large one at the house and never carried the small one with me.

Very useful

Most of the time it powers my GPS, but it also charges my phone or my netbook or my organiser while I'm pootling about.

Just before the out of oil experience, I forgot about the 3A limit and plugged my air compressor in to it to pump up the rear tyre.:opps: After replacing the fuse with a 10A one (temporarily) I pumped up my rear tyre. No smoke...

Cheers;

Pogo.

You may want to connect the gps directly to the battery (hardwire). We had a thread on this recently...as long as it's protected by a fuse, all should be fine and it frees up the need to charge it as it's done automatically when it's mounted...

My GPS does the auto shutdown when the power is cut at the 12V. It also powers the fuzz buster and charges the cell.

12 volt Receptical

I use mine for my gps but I was thinking about adding another one under the seat setup to jump the spyder in case I had battery problems. I could jump it with the cigarette lighter jumper cables. I have an SE5 :spyder:theres no popping the clutch :ohyea:

So far I have never used mine, but my husband installed two in my dash so I really have no need.

So far I've never used mine. I'm sure someday I may use it to charge some piece of electronics gear as I'm headed down the road.:doorag:
