I'm embarrassed to put this in writing but I'd really like some feedback.
The trailer connector plug into the underside of the left rear bag of my Spyder has always been a little on the loose side. On my wife's Spyder you can rotate the outside ring of the plug and secure it in place. On mine, the ring never seemed to secure it. But since I have never had it come loose, I ignored it.
On our last trip it did come loose but I never noticed until we stopped for gas and I saw the connector dragging on the ground. It must have been dragging for some time because the entire one side of the plug was worn off at a 45 degree angle. I took a knife and pared away the melted plastic so that the metal connectors (or what was left of them) showed and pushed the plug up into the receptacle under the bag. Surprisingly it held in place and when I checked the lights everything still worked on the trailer. I duct taped everything together and we went on our way.
Now I am faced with doing the duct tape deal every time we hook and unhook the trailer or addressing the thought of replacing the plug. The dealer is researching whether the plug is available separately or if I have to buy the entire trailer wiring harness.... but he thinks it will be the entire harness assembly.
Has anyone replaced the multiple pin connector for the trailer with a standard four or five pin flat or round connector? I seem to recall Scotty addressing that issue a couple of year's ago but I can't seem to locate that thread.
As I see it I have three choices....
1. Continue to duct tape it together
2. Buy a new trailer wiring harness (probably going to be expensive and hard to install).
3. Replace the wiring with something more sensible (and cheaper)
