Oil Over Filled and a Bit Foamy

Just checked the oil level on my new to me 2008 RS and I believe it is over filled. Dip stick reads F without screwing it in at all and I noticed some foam / bubbles on the dip stick. The previous owner (a trusted friend and maintenance nut) had just changed oil using Castrol Power RS Racing 4T Full Synthetic 10W-40 SL. I know the owners manual says "DO NOT OVERFILL" but is there any real concern? Apparently he has been filling like this since his first oil change. Not concerned, just curious...thanks

First, make sure you are checking the oil the right way...brp has a silly procedure, and yes, it makes a difference.
Second, if it is indeed overfull then its fairly easy to use an extractor and pull some out. Doubt it will hurt anything, but the extra oil does get drawn up into the intake and will make a mess.

FYI- a lot of us run at the half mark on the dipstick to keep the oil out of the intake.

EASY METHOD FOR CHECKING OIL

I have always done this and it saves a TON of time .............Always check your oil.....AFTER ....the ride , it is always at the correct temp. and then you never have to wait .................just sayin......Mike ...............PM me if you are going to Spyderfest , I'll bring something I made to check the oil for you :thumbup:

It pushes some oil up the breather tube into the air box. You can just suck a little out of the tank and it will be fine. Try 2 oz and see how it is then.

I'll wait and check after my next ride. I did warm it up and ride a couple miles before I checked it though. In the future I'll just put in 4 quarts (with filter change..always do filter) Any thoughts on the foam I mentioned on the dipstick? Normal?

Foam is normal. When I do an oil change on my SM I use only 4 quarts.

That is normal with overfull oil. Don't ask me how I know.

There you have it..

don't know where you are but you should check the oil spec's when using other than oem oils. The foaming will be present when engine has just been shut down if you wait a bit it will subside...:thumbup:

IIRC the oil level on the stick COLD should be ~ 1/4" from the bottom of the stick just for reference. If it is full cold it is indeed over filled.:thumbup:
