There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Upshifting without Cluth

While at a very slow speed in the grass, I mistakenly lifted my left foot while it was under the shfit lever and to my surprise, it shifted very smoothly into 2nd WITHOUT using the clutch.

My question is, is it a safe practice to up shift (quick blip of the throttle while doing so) without the clutch or is this a very bad habit to develop and I'll end up with damage to the gear box?

Thanks,
Jeff

If you do it right you won't damage the clutch. A quick 'blip' of the gas and then shift - you can feel if it's 'smooth' or not. When I'm out thrashing and riding hard I don't use the clutch - too busy holding on for dear life!

More difficult to do if downshifting - so I usually do use the clutch for that.

In my Moto X days I rarely used the clutch.

I use a klicktronic electric shift system due to lack of function in my left hand/arm. In upshifting, I rarely use the clutch, just roll off the throttle and tap the "up" button. With a bit of practice you can do the same on the manual shift SM5. Downshifts are a bit more difficult to master and I almost always use the clutch. They can be done however if you let the RPM's fall below about 3500 - 3000 range.

The gears in this motor are massive for a bike motor. I saw a cutaway motor at Homecoming and was amazed at how beefy they are (almost an inch in thickness). This gearbox was developed and tested in the GP racing arena and it shows in the size of the hunks of metal they use inside it to send the motive force from pistons to rear wheel. This also accounts for the loud "clunk" when shifting. As the Rotax guy said to me "You can have quiet, or you can have reliable, not both."

On flat ground, normal get up and go, I rarely use the clutch to up shift. It took a relatively short time to find the sweet spot at each level. I always use the clutch down shifting.

Mike,
Your what Ive been waiting for!!!! LOL
Did you make a bracket for your LKlicktronics unit, or did it come with one specific to the spyder?
Can I ask where you got it?
I want to use the same unit. I see the Pingel has a kit that has a bracket specific to the Spyder, but Im not sold on the quality or the reliability of the Pingel.

Thanks in advance!!!
