• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Custom Dynamix Brake light install

Buggy

New member
Called my dealership and they want $200.00 to install a HMT brake light and a brake light modulator. How hard a install is this on a RT. I am tempted to try this myself and save some cash. Also what purpose does the converter module serve....I am thinking it allows the brake light to act as a running light as well as a brake. The third option is their all in one which permits brake, running and turn signals. I wondering if this is too busy and takes away from the brake light. I want shock and awe when the brake light comes on to wake up texting drivers!

cheers

West Coast Powersports charged us 1 hours labor of $90 to install the same light. They're not that far from you. They convinced us to get the converter ($29.95) so the light would stay on as a taillight. I'm glad we did because it looks awesome when I ride behind the wife and lights up the area nicely for better rear visibility. I'm not sure if it's the same model or a different one, but I believe when you also hook it up as turn signals, you lose several of the lights on both sides as they become dedicated for the turn signals.
Tampa Powersports is the same company and is closer to you. We like to work with Ben at the Clearwater location. In Ben's words, 'my guy's pretty good at installing these lights because you only get one shot to make it right'. And they did.

If you have removed panels off your RT in the past this is a Breaze. The hardest part is figuring out the wiring which there is good posts on here helping with. I enjoy saving money and doing most things my self. I also have the HMT with turn signals and converter. Most of the install is plug-N Play other then Drilling 1 hole and 1 wire tap on the left side. Hope this helps.

I much prefer it wired where its NOT lit with the running lights and comes on BRIGHT and flashing (for a few seconds) when I hit the brakes. There is a good reason the HMT light on cars is NOT on with the running lights. Its purpose is to be NOTICED when you hit the brakes.

I would avoid the one with the integrated turn indicators as well, you as asking for nanny troubles.

It does one thing well, make it do several things and it does none of them all that well.

For what's it's worth I dissagee with the above comment. this is one of the 1st lights I put on when i purchased my spider & 10K miles later and had no issues with lights or the nanny. I have had lots of comments about being seen so much better with it.

I have my light wired as a running/brake light.
The turn signal portions, evidently doesn't play well with the 2014 electronics, so I'd steer clear of that unit.

Reconsider it.

Consider the running light and brake light option. The difference between the low level running light and the high level brake light is so great that someone behind you will pick up on it. Instead of one level of shock and awe, you will have two levels of shock and awe. If you are very proficient in removing the panels and would feel comfortable in taking the one shot at installing this, I would say to go for it. The instructions that come with it are adequate but it's your final call.

If you want shock and awe (and it's legal in your state) consider the strobe unit also sold by CD. I installed the HMT with the converter and the strobe as my first attempt at customization. It wasn't too difficult, but I did need wiring advice from CD to get the strobe to work with just the HMT and not all the brake lights. The strobe has several different patterns so it's easy to find one that will get peoples attention and that you're comfortable with.

I wired the strobe box in so that it strobes the HMT and the normal brake lights together in unison. The normal tail lights function as OEM.

Be aware that CD's plug n play harness for the HMT and strobe box are NOT plug n play for 13 and up Spyders. They tie the grounds together for the two sides and the nanny does not work with that. I sent them the updates needed and they told me my bike was manufactured incorrectly. So is every other 13 and 14 I suppose. Custom Dynamics HMT light is a nice product but their customer service and tech support leaves MUCH to be desired.

Thanks for all the great info. I will give this a go myself and use the savings to buy more farkles!
:congrats: The best of luck to you with this worthwhile addition to your bike! :2thumbs:
We're definitely going to need to see pictures of the glorious results! :D

Here is the link from Custom Dynamics web site on the color install instructions for your brake light.
I installed one on my 2010 RT .I used these instructions and it was easy. Read instructions before attempting and take your time.

I would suggest that you remove the 3 Screws on the inside of the rear trunk that hold both Right /left speaker pods on and loosen the speakers a bit to feed the wires down where they need to go. It is not in the instructions but is a lot easier then trying to fiddle with the plastic wire feader thingy.
