• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Well, I've got to change my vote, the slip joint gaskets in the exhaust are gone. I wonder how many have gone out with stock mufflers as opposed to Hindles or other aftermarket exhausts?

Repair Survey

With 13K miles on my SM5, haven't had any problems needing servicing. Just the usual brake squeak, etc. in the 13 months I've had it.

back to dealer

i am bringing mine in for the 3rd time something is wrong with the computer.when i first take off in the morning every thing is good 70 miles later pull over for a stretch.15 minutes later turn key put bike in neutral hit start nothing the letter e lights up everytime you hit start so you pull the clutch in bang she starts ok now you take off about 40 miles later the computer starts scanning check engine', the engine light+NEUTRAL+REVERSE+THE LETTER E IS BLINKING NOW I LOSE THE POWER STEERING TALK ABOUT PLAYING WITH YOUR MIND THEN WHEN IT COOLS DOWN EVERYTHING IS OK.:chat::dontknow:

Hey, John... from what I've read, muffler type really doesn't matter. The initial production batch of both upper and lower seals were re-spec'd and replaced by a new batch late last year.

According to the poll so far the result is pretty sad for BRP. Only little over 50 out of every 100 is problem free. Bad track record thus far.

Leaking Master Cylinder. Hopefully will have it back on Saturday and be able to finally finish this build.:gaah: Its been apart for WAY TOO LONG!!!!:cus:

If you look at the respondents for the SM5 separate from the SE5 the percentages look more realistic. Thus as of 4/28/09 9:50 pm eastern:

266 total votes broken down by SM5 or SE5

176 SM5 and 90 SE5
Never 100 = 56.8% Never 44 = 48.8%
Once 49 = 27.8% Once 23 = 25.5%
More than 27 = 15.3% More than 23 = 25.5%

This indicates that the SM5 has a slight advantage of roughly 6% +/- over the SE5. But the SE5 looks much better in this light than it does in the overall total of the number being used for each.

Just thought this was a more realistic view.

Just noticed post by docdoru above. I agree with him.

I've been to the shop once with my SM5 because of no power steering. I went 7600 miles this way because I didn't know any different. My PS was bad from day one.

But that was a 5 week "Once". Mostly the dealership and BRP working out the kinks. In the end all went well and the dealer (Alcoa Good Times in East Tennessee) did me right and went beyond the call of duty to get me back on the road.

They replaced the GPS (Gear Position Sensor), the SAS (Steering Angle Sensor) and the Power Steering unit itself. They did this one item at a time and nothing worked until the PS unit was replaced so I'm not sure if the other parts were defective or not.

Now my PS works great and I am a very happy camper. Both BRP and the dealer (Alcoa Good Times) stood behind the product and you can't ask for more than that.

The other fix, parking brake would not release (fixed with new upgraded part, works flawlessly! I put it on and off even when I don't need it because it works so well now).

All done on warranty, no cost to me. Stuff happens and I thank BRP and Alcoa Good Times for taking care of my issues.

Lemon Law

I got mine back today and after 15 minutes it stopped shifting again. I am going for the Lemon Law Clause. This is a terrible experience. Just take the darn thing already.:gaah::helpsmilie::dontknow::(

The intermediate gear in the starter drive train seized in it's bearings on my SE5 after only 470 kilometers. I thought the breakdown period was supposed to happen after the break-in period. Silly me! 27 days in the shop. Seems OK now.

Shop Repair

We took our SE5 in for 600 mile service and we had heard about the computer update and part for the SE5 so we had it done thinking nothing was wrong with the transmission as it was. But the update made downshifts lightning quick on emergency stops and much smoother on upshifts.:2thumbs:We now have 3000 miles and are ready for the next service. The only complaint we have now is that the parking brake adjustment does not last long and we are running out of adjustment quickly, but heard about a gear or cog replacement that is supposed to take care of the problem.

just had to bump this one for a little more input.

Grumpy (hubby) is talking about getting an SE5, but I think he should just go with the SM5.

In 1 year and 2 months, I have had to take my spyder bake to the dealer to replace the radiator, some relays, and just got a new clutch valve solenoid replaced today. Still the best thing I ever purchased though and would do it again.:2thumbs:

Just a warning?? POS

Just to warn others so they keep their right hand ready to tap the E-stop when the bike goes into auto pilot. Jumps from 1st to 3rd, and floors the gas with a message scroll of mission. I applied the brake, and it was over powering the brakes I had the sense to trip the E-stop in those second before hitting the back of a car. It locked itself in 3rd gear I called a buddy, and we pushed it two miles home. As you all know your warranty does not cover towing, and I was not restarting it to have anyone get killed.

Just a warning.:hun:

Whoa! Sure glad you are all right! I have been preaching about using the kill switch to shut the bike off every time, just so folks are used to it for situations like these. Takes a clear head to react as quickly as you did, though...well done! Let us know what the dealer finds out for a cause. Maybe it will be related to my throttle sticking condition, and give my poor tech a clue to a solution. I don't want to start a fire, but I do prefer the instant control of a clutch in situations like this. Ne reflection on other people's choices. BTW, the BRP BEST extended warranty does cover towing.
