The Covered Bridge

that I have behind me in the picture on my posts, was destroyed today by fire. The bridge was built in 1889 and known in Pennsylvania as the Delville Bridge. The fire was arson!!!! Some lowlife just had to destroy a piece of history for no reason at all. Sorry, but I feel down today!

We're fortunate to have an Historic Bridge up near us...
People don't realize how hard they are to maintain, or how easy they are to lose. :shocked:

That is sad to hear, we don't have bridges like that here in New Zealand, but I have seen a lot of similar ones over the years
while watching Movies etc.. And you could almost guarantee there was one in a Western Movie or Similar, and almost always one in Dukes of Hazzard. Kind of Iconic with those types of Movies etc...
Hopefully they get the dirtbags that did this.
Do you think they would ever replace it with a Replica??

Too early to tell if the bridge can or will be rebuilt, as this just happened this morning. The initial estimate for replacement is $1 million. We live in a rural county with a rather small population, so we may not have the funds available for such a project. Even if it is decided to replace, you can't replace the history.

How much history must be associated with that bridge. How many generations must have crossed it. Even if a new one is built, it will not be the old one. Kind of like the World Trade Center Building, which opened today. It is not the destroyed one, but is symbolic. A new bridge could be the same.

I love history and hate to see it disappear. The worst is when it is deliberate. Hope they rebuild it, though not the same, but it will be hard to get used to not having it there...:gaah:

Covered Bridge

We had a record flood in 1972. The bridge sustained a lot of damage and had to be rebuilt. As far as I know the deck was reused as well as the main stress beams (arch). They had to do repairs to the sides and the roof, but for the most part the old bridge was rebuilt using the original lumber.

I have a one lane wooden bridge in my neighborhood which goes over a pretty fast running creek. The state has limited it to 4 tons maximum. I get a little creeped out every time I ride the :spyder2: over it. No covered roof on this one. This is not a historical one though.

We have a beautiful covered bridge on the Quebec/NY border just north of the Trout River border crossing. It had become a bit unsafe. Those in power found that it had been built using American plans (& timbers, I think).

They dug out the old plans & rebuilt it bringing the timbers up from the US. The bridge has a name: "Percy" & I try to go over it several times on rides each summer. Part of our history.

Darn shame someone destroyed yours LEEB.
