• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Only BRP can provide a new key for your Spyder. Your dealer BRP technicien will use BUDS software to program your new key. Some informations have to be store in the key chip.
As Bob says, not strictly true. A genuine Can Am key, yes, only a BRP dealer can get that. They don't use BUDS to program them. They use a Master Key and the DESS on your bike. Doing it that way you can only have 4 keys for the bike because each one is programmed uniquely. The Aprilla/Triumph key is cloned. To the DESS they look exactly the same as the one used for cloning. You can have as many clones as you want.

If you lose all the programmed keys for your bike there is no way to create a new key. You have to replace the DESS for about $140 just for the module. Then add labor. A few cloned keys is cheap insurance!

You don't need BUDS to program a key... just the device that will clone it for you... :thumbup:
Apparently; at least SOME hardware stores or locksmiths, have that capability.

Even if you bought 1 key elsewhere, you have to program this new key with Buds systems. And BRP programs only key sold by the dealer. It's the case here in Canada. So good luck.

But, you can do business with this guy in HI if you want. If he lost your key, you are in big problem.

At no time is BUDS used to program a new key. Only dealers can program a new key to the Spyder using a dealer master key and the process takes less than 2 minutes. Now you can buy clonable blanks online. Cut and clone as many as you want of the keys that have already been programed. This can be done by anyone that has the cloning machine. No need to get the dealer involved. I live in Canada and that's what I did. Do not confuse programing and cloning, they are not the same.

I googled 529036106 (master key) and found that Gear Head sold them. I now have a master key, and I am going to try programming a couple of Aprila replacement keys to work with my original keys.

I have the master key, instructions are in the service manual, read the instructions several times And get the sequence down ,very easy to screw and end up with no key, number each key so you don't lose track. :ohyea:
 
This same kind of system is used by other manufacturers. Here are the steps from the manual

To add or reprogram a key, carry out the following steps:
1. Insert an already programmed functional key
into the ignition switch.
2. Turn the ignition key to ON.
3. Turn the ignition key to OFF.
4. Press MODE button for 3 seconds.
5. Wait 5 seconds.
6. Remove programmed key.
7. Insert MASTER KEY (P/N 529 036 106).

NOTE: The master key is purposely “not cut” and will not turn in the ignition switch.

8. Wait until the cluster displays MASTER.
9. Remove the master key.
10. Insert a key to program.
11. Turn ignition switch to ON.
12.Wait until cluster displays NEXT KEY.
13. Turn ignition switch to OFF.
14. Press MODE button for 3 seconds.
15. Remove key.
16. Insert next key to program.
17. Turn ignition switch to ON.
18.Wait until cluster displays NEXT KEY.

NOTE: If there are at least 2 keys programmed and you do not wish to program more keys (4 maximum), leave the last programmed key in the ignition switch. If you wish to program another key, repeat the previous five steps.

19.Wait until cluster displays SUCCESS.
20. Turn ignition switch to OFF.
21. Remove key.
Key programming procedure is complete.

NOTE: When the maximum of 4 keys are programmed, the cluster will display SUCCESS. Start engine and let run for more than 2 minutes. If engine does not stop on its own after 2 minutes,
programming mode is complete.
 
If you lose both keys and therefore have to replace the DESS module, you can program the first two keys without the master key. You must program two keys or the system won't work.

The starting procedure is two separate processes, physically operating the ignition switch, and and electronic recognition of an authorized key. The module is on the wall above the battery and the antenna is on the ignition module.

I was just thinking of a scheme to make the bike less vulnerable to theft, if someone wants to try doing it. Take the antenna off of the ignition module and locate it somewhere just under the plastic. Then, to operate the bike put a chip key head next to the antenna and a plain key into the ignition. A thief would have one hell of a hard time figuring that one out, I think, providing the place to put the chip isn't overtly identifiable. Of course this means you have to mess with two items all the time to start the bike, or put the dumb key in one of Lamont's IPS key covers and just carry the chip key head with you.

I see a part number for one of those babies: what source do you recommend for them?

Bought mine from Gear Head. Matches what the service manual says about it. No cuts, red head labelled Can Am. Made in Italy. I think it was about $20. Took about a week to get it.
 
Gear Head sold me one, and I was surprised because I don't know of another manufacturer that you can get a master key for.
BRP may not be particularly concerned about what happens to master keys. After all, a master key is useless without a Spyder and one key to operate it. If a thief carts off your Spyder he will have to put a new DESS on it to get it to run, and you don't need the master key to program the first two new keys for a new DESS.
