• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

GPS- Questions--

Has anyone used a regular Garmin Nuvi for instance for use on the Spyder instead of the Zumo 660? How does it work?

I was thinking of having a 12-volt adapter put in on the front of the bike and trying to use my existing Garmin GPS's --I just can't see spending $650 for a Zumo just because it is gasoline resistant and has a really bright screen to be visible in daylight. Just not enough pluses for that kind of expenditure.

Any viewpoints, experiences, etc?

Thank you ahead of time!

;)

I use a Nuvi 550, with a powerlet USB charging cable. It works just fine, and has withstood some pretty heavy rains (although the charging cable is not waterproof and eventually died. I siliconed the replacement. I purchased a RAM cradle from GPSCity to mount the GPS. No output jack to my comm system, nor Bluetooth, and you can't hear the audio with a helmet on at speed, but it works better than a map.

I used a Nuvi for a year and it worked fine. I had my lead come right from the battery and put a ziplock battery over the Nuvi with a rubber band, when it rained. Worked great. Spent the money I saved on that and bought sena units and used the Bluetooth with it. Worked great. My company issued IPhone and I use that now for Nav, music and phone.

Same here..!!

we run a garmin nuvi 1350 and works well. Been through snow, hail, and rain with out a hitch. Have a ram hook up and a 12 v double outlet in the frunk. Cable up along the controls right side.. :ohyea:

Yes, and it works great. I have it mounted where my temp. gage used to be (using a RAM mount and bracket) and I use the 12v for the gage light. It has been through the rain and heat without a problem. I don't ever use the audio stuff so it meets my needs perfectly - and the money I saved went to other "farkles".

I just use my iPhone 4S in an otter box and cradle, ram mounted to my dash. I don't use it in the rain though.

cheap garmin works fine, just cover with a plastic bag when it rains, no problems.

Breif moments are fine but be carful with electronics in plastic bags, they fill with condensation and will ruin the gadget. If you must put some silicone packets in the plastic as well to help soak up some of the condensation.

If you're going to run regular electronics and want to play it safe an Otter box is the way to go.

I like my 660, wished BRP had included or provide an upgrade option for the 665. Although I miss the physical buttons of the Zumo 550..

Mounted my $80.00 Nuvi 255 with $55.00 Ram mount bits and pieces and directly wired to switched 12V acc circuit with $20.00 harness.

Thanks to all of you -----I'll get this figured out soon and save $$$$

Thanks to all who responded----I think I'll do this for now to save $$$!

I'd like to get a 12-Volt set up on the front end of the Spyder, maybe at Spyderfest????

Anyway- makes sense- I got 3 older Garmins--surely one of them I can use on the Spyder for a while- and will simply not use it in the rain! Got that figured out- that part is EASY!

Thank you again for you input.

I have a RAM mount for my Garmin GPSMAP 76 CSx off my left handle bar. This unit is waterproof. I use it because of the map that I can see where I'm going and for Geocaching. I also use the Garmin Zumo 550 that is RAM mounted on the top of the dash.
See my posts in the Mods Section.

I have recently added a cradle and wiring for a Magellan unit to mount instead of the 76 CSx.
