Ahh crap why can't I stay outa this?
I'm tired of big brother (government) being the nanny state that it is. Officers do have some power or ability to issue warnings versus citations so that knocks the don't blame cop argument. If our (safety) was so important a price would not be on the citation would it? Or should every ticket I've had (alot),pay for my funeral in the event I die being a dumb ass. Lamonster I get it you do very well taking care of yourself and don't need a citation to save your life. OK we need cops to prevent anarchy but we don't need babysitters. Bottom line a verbal slow it down would have done the trick. Instead you received what I've dubbed THE GOOD TIME TAX.:cus::cus::banghead::chill:

Here is one of the daily post from a deals gap web site. This aslo backs up it is not about the speed only.

Monday is here, and so are we. Good morning everyone. As of 8 am, its was cool out but very nice. Fall feels like its getting started already, and all of us here think the fall will be quick this year. With the droughts weve seen, there are already some hardwoods that are dropping their leaves. Im pretty sure that it wont be very vibrant this autumn, but you never know.
Its still pretty somber state around here after the weekend. Unfortunately, we had a rider pass on from injury here late Saturday night. Rider was southbound at the 4mm, and used too much rear brake which made him unable to maintain control. Southbound rider hit an oncoming northbound rider in the northbound lane and the southbound rider succumbed to his injuries on scene. There were still quite a few riders out at that time, and they were all there to assist with the scene. Thanks to all for making a crappy situation a bit easier to deal with logistically. Also, thanks again to all the responders on the scene.
Back Brake: Folks, I dont care who taught you to use the back brake in the mountains, but Im telling you that it is NOT your primary method of stopping, let alone in an emergency situation. If on a sportbike, most have 2 rotors on the front wheel, and are more than capable of stopping a bike in real short order. If on a cruiser, you might find using both to be the most advantageous, but never use strictly the rear brake, especially in an emergency situation. This year there have been 2 fatalities that can be blamed on the rear brake, and lack of experience. Im not saying this to upset anyone, but it is very important to learn from these situations, and I am merely trying to pass along some info that might help you, or someone you love, in the future. All riders should practice emergency stopping from time to time so you can get used to what your bike will do under such conditions.

If "only" warnings were given out to traffic violators do you think that would encourge drivers to obey the law? Of course not....but hitting them with fines and points on their license will do the trick. I have over 25 years in law enforcement. Maybe if all the whiners, who think that they were singled out and given a citation, had to pull as many mangled bodies out of wrecks as police officers do, their way of thinking might change. Many people consider themselves to be great drivers capable of speeding safely.....only to be proven wrong when involved in a MVA. I have never seen anyone going up to 5 mph over the posted limit receive a ticket (unless it was in a school zone) 15mph over is a different story.

I'm glad to see we have so many saints on this board though, you all are great example of how I should drive. Not sure if I can but I am encouraged that so many of you never break the law in anyway including speeding. :bowdown:

Hey buddy, we're not all saints here. I've got a reputation for living up to my plate... QIKON3. I'll get a ticket sooner or later, I average over 135km's an hour in the 80km zone that I call "the road to work". It takes my wife 27 minutes to get from my house to Starbucks... it takes me 15-17 minutes on the Spyder. I deserve a ticket, I just hope I don't get it doing 5-15 over. Ticket me, just make it worth my while. LOL:2thumbs:

Who would of thought we are in the presence of so many non speeders. I personally have 5 years in as a paramedic on a ambulance and have also pulled lots of bodies out of wreckage. This has just been my experience, I know everyone has opinions but my measly 5 years on the ambulace mostly involved drinking, methadone users, drinking, little old ladies and weather related. There is of course that occasional speed related accident but when the details all cme out there was usually drugs or alcohol involved.

I think the real complaint here is the amount of speed traps on this one road. I rode 150 miles sunday and never saw a single cop. All the roads were state highways and through multiple diffrent counties. Now if I had gone to deals gap or shady valley I would of drove through at least one road block and normally there are nearly 1 cop per every couple miles. Just does not seem right. I have no problem with there presence on the dragon or the snake ut what about everywhere else.

I bet most of these non speeders do not live in Tn and had to deal with the well mannered oficials we deal with on our favorite riding areas.

I guess we have to look at it another way. this is America and everyone can have an opinion even if it's wrong

I do speed, and I get pulled over for it from time to time. If I get a ticket, I deserve it. Thats the way it goes. I speed more on the bike than anything else to get away from the idiots on the road. I figure if I get pulled over I will explain how it was safer to do what I did and get in an open area. I might still get a ticket but I would rather pay a ticket than an ER bill.

I travel all over the country for the big 5 rallies each year and also have a smaller one close by at Lake George. I see this kind of "The Good Time Tax" thing over and over again.

In the case of Lake George I know this 100% as I go there many times a year when the rally is not going on. I see that tickets are given out for things at that rally that would not even get a second look the rest of the year for sure, and it's about the $$$ 100%!

We used to have a saying but now I think it's going to be replaced by "The Good Time Tax"

It was " welc0me to the rally please have your checkbook ready!"

Anybody who wants me to believe these kinds of victimless crimes" of such tiny impact would be worth the time and expense of a police cruiser and an officer if we couldn't be fined for them is out of their mind!

Drugs, prostitution, robberies, assaults and domestic disputes cause more real damage everyday but are no way pursued with the same passion by police departments. Why, because they can't fine these people and they actually cost the system money when caught.

Why do you think the big insurance companies all give grants to police departments all over the country? They give them for everything from new equipment to overtime pay to run traffic stops? Why, because after the nice policeman gives you the ticket they can raise your insurance rates for the next 39 months.

Insurance is a huge FOR PROFIT business in America, and if it was not profitable for them to do this they would not. Also, please don't tell me it's because my insurance company loves and cares about me. They just love the money I send them bottom line

I have had several police officer friends over my lifetime and what Lamont said is correct. I don't know a one of them that drive the speed limit off duty. This has been over a lifetime of knowing many officers. Also I am no kid at almost 50 so this has been a very long time indeed.

Rather they all say "don't worry if we get stopped I'll just flash the badge and it will all be OK." This was not once or twice in my lifetime by the same officer. But over and over again, many of which are just customers we talk to at the rallies about their choice of blue lights on their bikes.

This "I'm above the law that I will hold you to the letter of" mentality is what strikes me as most strange in all of this over and over again.

If Lamonster was stopped by this cop for the same thing before and this was something that he did not listen to this officer about I could see the ticket. But if I am to believe that going 60 mph on a straight with a Spyder and all it's safety features was a danger to anyone, Lamonster included. Sorry I don't buy it.

Now tell me it's about the "The Good Time Tax" to ride Deals Gap, and now we got something I can go with.

Regarding the speeding - we've all seen the dare-devil 100 mph YouTube runs through the gap with the rice rockets - these are the guys who screw it up for all us when we get caught with our pants down on a simple overtaking or just the normal every day winding through the gears. Each year there are hundreds of accidents up there from guys who think they can ride but really don't have a clue!
