I understand what you are saying Scotty, no denying the good stuff works. But I still contend it isn't the UTMOST protection one can wear.
Mesh may be good, but wouldn't you agree that a fully armored textile or leather, fireproof suit would offer "more" protection?
Sorry, this whole ATGATT stuff always sticks in my craw, because I see folks make concessions to the "utmost safety" to a level where THEY are comfortable with it and then they can say, " Well,,,, yeah, but it is still safer than xxxx".
Honestly, who gets to decide when a concession to the utmost safety is still OK and still ATGATT? I guess we all have to have that "one thing" that just bugs the heck out of us. This one thing is mine.pps:
To me ATGATT is an easy acronym to use and I get it, I really do. But to me, ATGATT is the absolute epitomy of protection you can wear and you must wear it at all times. Anything less isn't ATGATT,,, (to me). Now saying to someone that they would be safer to gear up, or that mesh would be safer than shorts, makes absolute sense and I agree with that. But it bugs me when I see an ATGATT proponent in jeans and a non-armored mesh jacket or "worse" a t-shirt.
OK. I am done. LOL. :roflblack:
Sorry for the rant. I still feel the love brother. See you in Durango!
There is little difference between solid textiles and mesh textile gear...apart from the snag factor. Bot show good resistance to abrasion and meting. The armor in some mesh gear is less, and that would be a factor, but most good quaility jackets and pant have equal armor in both versions. None would be as good as leather, with padding and 2-3 layers at critical point, and armor. Full one-piece suits would be the safest. Few of us would ever wear this kind of racing gear on the street. As to firesuits, Nomex is not abrasion resistant and is not a good idea.
I heartily agree with you that ATGATT is overused, misunderstood, and mostly abused. It also means different things to different people...as you have so aptly pointed out. Is a person wearing a half helmet as safe as a person with a full-face version? Is a person wearing textiles as safe as one in leathers? Is a person wearing fingerless gloves as safe as one wearing armored leather gloves? How about the rider wearing the right suit and helmet but mere tennis shoes? Too much room to wiggle here.
What began as a program to encourage riders to wear full protective jackets and pants, a helmet, gloves and at least ankle high boots turned into something else. A rider must gauge his or her own degree of risk and the appropriate protective needs, and go with what he feels is appropriate. I will shake my head at a rider wearing shorts, but I won't lecture him. I will also shake my head about a street rider (especially of a Spyder) wearing full leathers in the summer sun...but they won't get anything except maybe asking if they'd like to share my water. Instead of ATGATT, perhaps we should just do like Hill Street Blues and say, "Be careful out there!"
C ya in CO! Looking forward to it, my friend.
