• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Wedge Mount to level off top of dash !

Oct. 15, 2011
I constantly try different ways of mounting my portable Garmin 1450. It worked out fine on my 06 GL1800 right on the windshield. I am wondering if I would have to make a small wedge (painted black) to double adhesive to the top of the dash so that the GPS will be able to angle down in the sunlight. It won't do that now because of the angle of the top of the dash being slanted backwards.
Oct. 11,2011
I made the wedge out of a piece of 2x4 then painted it black. I did use the double sided tape to hold everything together and mounted the round plastic plates that come with the GPS. It looks like it will work fine.
Gordon

Yes that's possible.

I did the exact same thing to build a camera mount that shoots through the windshield.

Just make sure you paint the wood first to seal it, so the double stick tape will hold.

I took a look at the accessories Garmin offer for the 1450. There is a suction-cup holder with a bracket for your GPS. You could screw-mount a piece of plexiglass to the top or underside of the dash for the suction device to adhere to and this would allow you to adjust the angle of the screen to suit yourself.

prefer a RAM mount. Much more secure than the suction cup thing. http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-garmin-nuvi-1490t-cradle-ram-hol-ga35u.html

I agree. I shoulda investigated what RAM were offering, instead I looked at Garmin UK. I figured that even a suction cup was a neater option than what was being proposed. I have a suction cup holding a DAB radio accessory in my car, in over a year it has never let go, but instinct tells me that if I wait long enough it will... :f_spider:

My mount

I plan on putting a gps on my RT but not on top of the dash. A friend has a basic garmin out in the weather for two years now on his Harley so I am going that way as well but I plan on mounting mine under the dash in front of the gauge plugs that are unoccupied on my base RT. I am putting a 12 volt outlet in the plug and will screw my gps mount to the underside of the dash right in front of were the gauge would go. I don't think a suction cup will hold with the vibration as it has fallen off in my cars at times. A $100.00 gps is better then the higher priced Zumo and even if I had to put it away on a rainy day is worth the meager cost.

Well, my Zumo 550 is getting old now, but when it was new Garmin said it could be immersed in 3 feet of water for 5 minutes without coming to any serious harm. They didn't say this so people would test it for themselves, it was only a stupid boast hammering home the point that the 550 was suitable for use on a motorcycle in all weathers.

If you set off with your $100 GPS in good weather and it turns wet you had better know (a) the route to where you were going, or (b) know your way back home, because you won't be getting any advice from your sat-nav, it will be in your pocket keeping dry.

My intention is not to rain on your parade but to point out that sometimes you simply must buy the correct equipment. ;)
