• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

BRP is 5W 40, AMSOIL recommends 10W 30 and some places suggest 20W 50. Can anyone share perpective on best choice of oil for a 6,000 mile oil change on a 2009 SE5?

Thanks,

Ah yes, another Oil Thread! And I am really a sucker for these. I'm always hoping education will some day win out over Marketing. But so far I've been wrong.

BRP recommends 5W-40 oil but you'll notice that there are no viscosity designations on the oil they sell. Here are some possible reasons for this.

1- The Castrol Blended oil ,that BRP is probably using, is 10w-40
2- 5w/10w is not a critical factor
3- Not putting a viscosity on the bottle allows BRP flexability to change the oil inside without having to change the bottle

I don't know that Amsoil recommends 10w-30. I have not heard this. I recommend the 10w-40 for the simple reason that 40 weight is better for the transmission gears.

Engines are not nearly as hard on an oil as transmissions are. The forces created between the transmission gears is much greater and requires more from an oil than engine componets.

Now if you run in consistanly colder temperatures then 10w-30 would make sense. 20w-50 will work well but it is thicker than needed for the Rotax engine. Thinner oil flows more quickly at engine startup and transfers heat better than thicker oil.

Everything is a trade-off. What you're looking for in oil viscosity is the sweet spot between too thick and too thin. For most people 10w-40 is that sweet spot. But either the 10w-30 or 20w-50 will also work just fine, in most cases.

Thanks everyone. I'm leaning toward the AMSOIL 10W 40. I appreciate the help.:doorag:
