• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

What brand of oil do you use?

Amsoil or Mobil 1

Stay away from Mobil 1. Now has SM rating which is a no no for Spyder Clutch... Formulation didn't change, but the label did. I ran Mobil 1 for over 6000 miles with no negative impact, but others have had clutch slippage.

I use Castrol 4T Synthetic 5w40 from CycleGear.... not to say I wouldn't use others, but that's the easiest for me to buy.

As for the peanut butter.... Crunchy all the way. :)

castrol was cooler

I tried amsoil first because it was more expensive but took it out after one week and switched to castrol 4t because of running hotter with amsoil, now castrol synthetic is all I use in all my vehicles

Mobile 1

As an aeronautical engineer, data speaks for itself. Mobile 1 is the most highly tested oil in the world and the only one that has met the FAA's stringent requirements for a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for extended oil changes in aircraft engines. A lot of this testing done in Rotax engines like the 990 in the Spyder. Porsche, Corvettes and Lincolns come from the factory with Mobile 1. The reality is that any fully synthetic would be a major improvement over conventional oil and all the oil manufacturers are showing this with their data. I wait for Mobile 1 15-50W to go one sale at $4.50 qt. Works flawlessly in the heat of Florida for our SE5. Suggest a lighter weight up north. I change oil and filters at 10,000 mile intervals for motor vehicles and 100 hours for boats and aircraft for the last 20 years. Whenever we mod these engines we all remark at the lack of wear on tear down in comparison to engines running conventional oils. Best performer so far is our Ford F-350 V-10 that tows 7-tons of Boston Whaler with Mercury Racing engines (also running Mobile 1
). Still running like new with half a million miles using Mobile 1 5-30W on 10k oil service intervals.

Bought a case of Royal Purple from Amazon (free shipping) based on recommendations from here. Been very happy with it. Engine did run a bit cooler (half to one bar) and I can't ask for more than that.

I use BRP oil, mid grade gas and 26 lbs of air in the front and 32 lbs of air in the rear tires....Got it all covered I think.;););)

:dontknow:
Not yet,
How many gallons does the tank hold, and your mpg, also do you get excess heat from the right side,
And if i tighten my battery connections will that solve all problems.:D [including world hunger]

Let's not forget: what aftermarket exhaust is best or do you have?

So how important is it to get motorcycle oil for your Spyder? I called my dealer and asked for which oil to get and he said 5w30. I started thinking I don't think any one makes 5w30 motorcycle oil do they? :hun: I looked on line and found many people saying to make sure it has the motorcycle endorsement ( JASO) is this for the wet clutch?

Tightening your battery connections won't solve world hunger. Everybody knows that reseating your relays and using a Battery Tender does that. :joke:

With out oil made for Wet CLUCH your clutch will slip and most likely fail.
I use 10 40 all year. I ride all winter many times at temp below 10 f and i never had a problem .

The spec for the Spyder is to either use their summer weight oil, or a 5W-40 synthetic blend or full synthetic motorcycle oil, that does not carry the SM rating.

Very important to get the right oil for MCs because of the wet clutch setup on most MCs. Do not add any kind of additives. If you are not sure, it's best to go with dealer's recommendation.

:agree:If you call The Tech # on the 4T container (like I Did twice). I think its 1-800 -ask-mobil- you will talk to a very knowledgeable tech that will tell you the formulation of Mobil 1 4T has not changed even though the letter was updated as happens every few years.
Has worked Great in my Supercharged Rotax Jet ski engines that basically run between 5,000 and 8,100 rpms ALL afternoon!nojoke

That may be fine. Do the aircraft engines and your jet Skis have wet clutches? That is the issue here... Nothing else.

I'm not picking a fight over oil. I used Mobile 1 for over 6k miles without issue. I'm changing to Amsoil thanks to the New SM rating on Mobil 1. I don't care if the formula is the same.
