REMOVING 1" BRP RISER?

morning, i just purchase the street magic 4.5" risers and the directions clearly state they cannot be used with the 1" brp riser. i purchased my 08 sm5 used and am not sure it even has the riser block. ( i think it does though) assuming it does , do i just remove the handlebars and take off the riser block , then re-install the handlebars? or is there needed hardware when its removed?
thanks in advance for the help!

I don't know anything about your new risers. Removing the BRP riser is that easy, if it is there. The BRP riser does not come stock and would have to have been added by the previous owner.

when you say " removing the riser block is that easy" . you mean its as easy as removing the handlebars, removing the block, then putting the bars back on?
thanks!

thats great news! thanks. i was worried because someone had posted something about losing the screws, and needing a gear puller to get the block off, didnt sound very fun.

The BRP riser replaces the standard handlebar clamp, before you remove it, you need something to replace it to hold the handlebars. Getting the cover off the handlebars can be "interesting". Before you start, measure from the top of the ridge on the center cover ("gas tank") vertically to the back of the cover on the handlebars - if it's less than 2 inches, you don't have the riser.

oh, ok. thats what i was worried about. i may be better off exchanging the 4.5" easy risers for a 4" if it turns out i do have the brp riser block. poop! i will measure it and see. thanks a ton!

The BRP riser is an extended version of the splined, lower portion of the handlebar attachment flange. It is attached to the steering shaft in place of the regular flange. You would need the stock part to make the swap. You also need a puller, some Loctite, and a torque wrench. Don't torque the nut too tight!!!

Or you could try for a 3 inch riser, or check Heli for a completely different handlebar, since it'll be off anyway.

Much easier to just exchange for the shorter risers and leave the BRP riser intact (if you even have it).

The Helibar and the Kewlmetal center console replacements are expensive and (in my opinion) ugly as sin --- but functional.

The black risers like the ESI ones work great and blend in really well. I have the 1" BRP riser AND the 3" ESI risers and really like them.

if it turns out i have the 1" riser, i will have to exchange the 4.5" for the 3". i jumped the gun getting the 4.5" just because they were half the price of the 3-4 inch ones. :(

If you wanted to keep the 4.5" risers and go back to stock on the BRP riser, I think I have one you can have, no charge. I'd have to root around in the garage to see if either mine or my wife's stock riser is still somewhere out there. To the point of how easy the replacement is, it easy as easy as you say but the actual work and specifically the cramped and inconvenient area that you do some of the work turns the swap into a difficult chore.

Agreed...I have the 1" BRP and the 3" ESI...the ESI really looks like a stock part...fits the bike very well...just a really good match...I think some of the other handlebar risers look like tinker toy parts...they just don't look like they fit the bike well, IMHO...

.....and don't forget to completely plug the "black hole" around the steering column, before you remove the handlebar cover! nojoke

A few have messed up their steering alignment when changing the brp riser- so be careful if you go that route. I would just get the shorter risers. I think the combo of the brp riser and the 3" risers looks better too.

Thank you amigo...I went that way...didn't really have a choice as I figured since I paid for the BRP riser that I might as well use it...

Much of this was caused by a batch of risers that were improperly manufactured, with splines that were off index. Generally speaking, the process goes well, and going back to the original riser shouldn't goof things up unless the riser that is there now, was one of the bad ones.

thanks everyone! i learned a few things, i DO have the brp riser. i see they make a "block" that acts like a spacer, and a replacement "steering wheel clamp". i have the clamp. i ordered the stock factory one today. custom dynamics would not allow me to return the 4.5" risers and buy the 3" so i have to go this route. does anyone know of a link that explains removing the handlebar cover?
thanks!
