• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

RS SM5 Q & A session

MCC or GPS?
And the winner is...Rando: MCC! :2thumbs: :firstplace:
The 2 nickel plated magnets are normally placed in the heads of the bolts that mount the ABS tone wheel. For unknown reasons, they slip towards the VSS reading area...

My Spyder @ 87K had this symptoms:
1. ryde 10 min, error codes (VSS Error, Check DPS, Limp Home Mode)= maximum 39 mph and 3500 RPM.
2. quick turn key off and on: Check DPS Error, unlimited mph and red line for the RPM; after 20 min, back to (1).
Note: DPS replaced few days ago.
:chat::popcorn:

I had the same basic thing going on with mine many moons ago. It turned out to be that the negative battery terminal was not torqued down enough.

In your case, the Limp Mode is different: max 45 mph and 4500 RPM...same in double brake lights bulbs burned...

What is the MCC?

:dontknow:

SM5 RS GPS

Just been for a ryde and noticed that the gear display sometimes changes from 5 to 4 to 3 to 5 to 4 etc whille actually in 5th gear. Otherwise normal. Obviously a faulty gear position switch. I did a bit of a search but came up with way too many threads and found none to help in relation to SM5.

Any other similar experience out there and will it cause other issues? I'm taking it on a 10,000km tour in 2 weeks and don't really want a trip to the dealer 425km away and having to take time off work.

Will it be ok to go as is?

Thanks in advance.

I'd replace the GPS. You have a classic sign of switch failure.

Thanks Scotty, that's what I intend to do, just couldn't find reports of faulty GPS on SM5 but I'm sure I've read of such. As it's the same sensor as on SE5 it's bound to have issues too, just less troublesome.

I rang the dealer who says he will report the fault to BRP forthwith in the hope that they authorise the repair this week.

Just out of curiosity, do you know if it will (or has on others SN5's) bring up a fault code or some other issue?

With thanks.

As I recall, with my faulty old brain, it will not necessarily bring up a code on an SM5 until it gets pretty bad. A lot of the initial PE Spyders had this issue, and it was a mystery at first.

and I just had the pulley off 2 weeks ago too, to check the spline. Oh well, at least i have a new switch which I purchased to take on the trip - just in case....

Hey Freddy, approx how much was that switch? Im getting the same kind of actions on my 2008 SM5 and havin a hard time convincing the dealer what it is. Might just bite the bullet and buy / change it myself.

Big John... I bought one myself back in 2009 and, at the time, list was about $115 and my dealer's price to me was about $90.

Interersting phenomenon

Well I replaced the GPS. Here's some good pics. Took about an hour and a half.

http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7831

BUT, the gear display still changes from 5 to 4 to 3 to 5 - just as before.
It still runs perfectly, just the display changes as you ride in 5th gear.

Ideas?

Hey LittleJohn, you say yours has been doing the same - does it still run normally?

There is a tiny bit of play in the GPS. When installing, it should be rotated while tightening. I think it needs to be rotated clockwise, but I don't remember for sure. The GPS or the GPS comm link could be faulty. They should both be tested following the procedures in the shop manual. Monitoring through BUDS would be good, but if the problem is only in the 4-5 range, that is pretty tough. This is not a normal condition, and should be addressed by the dealer, but it is hard to solve, and causes no serious problems, so most dealers will be reluctant to chase it.

Yeah, I was aware of the play in the mounting holes - slight, as you say Scotty but I snugged it up where it sat. I was thinking that it could be enough to allow it to display 4th gear, but not 3rd while actually in 5th. As it's no better with the new sensor, the faut is obviously elsewhere, as you suggest.

As long as it causes no problems on the SM5 I let it slide for now as Spyder is going on a very long ryde in 2 weeks.

It seems to be a rare problem from what I could glean.

I'll be interested to hear if LittleJohn has had any related issues with his.
