Nitrous - Toying with the Idea

It appears there has been a lot of "performance testing" going on other places than just SpyderFest. ;) A new speed shop has opened in a small town very close to me, and they are doing some serious business with the young hooligans that like to run these country roads.

Out of curiosity, I stopped and talked to them a little bit about the possiblity of hooking Nitrous up on my Spyder. They were pretty busy, so we did not get into too many details about the whole process which has peaked my curiosity even further.

They stated they should be able to put a 2 pound can under the rear fender lid, and have it spray directly into the airbox. They seemed pretty confident that a "small shot", as they called it, would not be damaging to the stock pistons of the Spyder. They said the 2 pound can would give between 3-5 shots, and of course they could refill it right there.

I know to get maximum performance boost would probably require new, heavy duty, pistons and probably changing of the cams. However, would this be a decent enough performance boost just for playing around every once in a while?

I know curiosity killed the cat, I am just wanting to make sure it doesn't kill my Spyder. :D

I think it could be done and still be pretty safe. I wouldn't mind playing around in this area too...

I doubt if your warranty would cover any damage caused by nitrous boost........a small shot of juice would probably be fun though.......

What if you disconnected it before taking it in for service. :dontknow: I know, kind of silly to ask that now that I have posted this in a public forum. :D

For my other fuel mapping issues, I have ordered the Juice Box Pro; however, it appears my order on April 11 was a pre-order as the units are still in development with no current ETA. The most interesting thing is Magic Man posted the units are actually being made by Power Commander and then rebranded for Two Bros. The wait is really working on my patience, and attempting to teach me what virtue might be. ;)

Really? PC making them for TB.... hmmmm.

I agree about disconnecting such things while going in for service -- especially if you're having problems that could be related to such mods.

You could also do the fuel pressure mod and just increase it while you know you'll be doing such 'performance testing'.

DynoJet would be the company making them, PowerCommander is their branding..... Actually, fairly common in the M/C industry, HD farms out things like that to vendors, Zippers has their T-Max made by others, I wouldn't be surprised if the Juicebox was made by a third party, there are several similar devices for other bikes with different branding.........

The Fuel Nanny and Juice Box (original flavor) are both made by Dobeck Performance.

I think you would have to do more than disconnect it, you'd have to remove all traces. I doubt they would ever cover an engine or drivetrain failure if they knew you ever had it on there. Oh yeah, peel off the NOS decal, too. :D

I posted a question on this last year and the response was not very favorable towards it. It would be fun just to have it on the Spyder even just for show.

Just like the Turbo kit--- it's a risk of warranty problems for sure--- but a heck of a lot cheaper than the Turbo too... and wouldn't get as much usage like a constant turbo running.

There's also another technology if memory serves that uses cyrogenics to supply boost....

That was interesting reading, thanks for the link.

:roflblack: I was not planning on displaying the NOS decals anywhere, except on the hidden bottle.

You are right though, from the reading I have been doing this might actually be easier if I was to get rid of the air box and go with either the KewlMetal or Evoluzione intake systems instead. Those could probably be modified a lot easier for the delivery. Also could be removed if need to be to hide all traces.

Of course, the scariest part of the venture would be the possibility of voiding the warranty. I wonder just how much a Hyabusa engine costs? :dontknow:

I wanted to hide it, and actually play with it though. :D I wonder where you would mount the tank just for show? I have seen them on the stretched swing arms on sport bikes. Should the next mod be stretching the Spyder? :yikes:

The nitrogen in the Nitrous is supposed to provide a rapid cooling effect as well, but it would be interesting to see what other technologies are available for this.

I never even thought about the fact that turbo kit will probably void the warranty. That would definitely suck, especially considering how much that unit costs.

After the reading I have been doing, I am not sure how many times I would actually use it either. Some reports state the take-off upon button press is so rapid that it feels like someone rear ended you and your arms are going to stretch to their fullest limits. :yikes:

Still sounds like it might be fun to hit the button every once in a while. :D

I have had nitrous on a few of my sportbikes. Its fun, but even small ( 25hp) shots will lean out the engine a lot. I set mine up to activate at wot and adjusted the fuel systems to increase fuel delivery starting at 85% throttle. 4 years on the Busa and 2 on the GSXR 100 without any motor damage. Its fun but make sure you watch your bottle level. Trying to show off and having the bottle empty out causes a nasty backfire with real bad results, such as airbox cracks and intake boots blowing off. A 2 lb bottle is good for around 20 short hits, depending on how strong your thumb is...LOL
I prefer this, so I will wait for a kit to come out

Okay Dave, now you are teasing me. What kit is this?

Thats the Velocity Racing stage 3 kit on my Hayabusa. Good for +500 hp at the rear wheel. Tons of fun

Now you really ARE teasing us....:ohyea:

Sounds like a hoot!

Still wondering what is up with Aerocharger. Seems the info and updates just have not been coming out lately.....:dontknow:

You are the one that said the stock pistons are cast.... :)

Which would blow them up sooner? Nitrous or Turbo?

Nitrous because with the turbo, you have the fuel system mapped either for the boost level/gear or in my case, by running a standalone fuel system that meters the A/F ratio. But, you can run either one as long as you dont get greedy with the boost level/nitrous nozzle size.
