GAS - regular or premium?

my spyder seems to run better on premium gas, but my dealer insists to run regular only, does anyone know if it really matters.

Depends upon which Spyder you ride. The RT has a higher compression ratio, which causes BRP to recommend premium. The RS uses regular according to BRP.

We have both. My wife uses regular in her GS (RS) & I have the RT. Up until yesterday, I ran premium, but am trying a tank of regular now. The jury's still out on it...

I have been running premium in both of our syders but our dealer told me they will do just fine on the midgrade fuel, and will not change the performance or mpgs. so I will try it to see. Been getting 31 to 32 mpgs with the 08 GS and 26.5 with the 2010 RTS.:spyder:

octane

I run 91 octane. The difference in price is worth it to me. I know there are a lot of opinions about fuel and oil, and I have mine based on research as well as my real world experience. What others do is fine with me; However, I have found my preference and very satisfied with it.:D

I run regular 87.
Put in a full tank of Shell premium a few hundred miles ago and it ran worse and didn't idle as smooth. Went back to regular and all is well.
But everyone really needs to try this out for themselves as personal experience seems to vary from Spyder and Ryder.

YMMV

:dontknow: :hun: What business is it of your dealer's what grade of gas you use, as long as it meets the minimum octane requirements specified by BRP, and you have not experienced any engine problems that may be fuel related? Pretty presumptuous of him, I would say. Burn whatever you please!

I run regular and here is why.
Pick any gas station. Ask them how much regular they go through in a week. Then ask them how much hightest they go through in a week.

The regular is fresher in most places.
With the alcohol freshness matters more

The data shows that it doesn't matter...with that being said, everyone here has an opinion...

Go with what you like...either will work fine in your bike....

Back to the entertainment portion of the thread.............

I'm not sure. I've got just under 1000 miles on my RT. I burned regular (87) octane for the first 800 miles. 25 MPG. Now I'm trying a higher grade (89) octane.
No noticeable performance difference, but I think I'm getting better gas mileage, close to 30. So, I'm paying 10% more per gallon for 20% more gas mileage. Sounds good, but the jury is still out.
I could be getting better mileage because the engine is getting more broken in.

That's the more likely scenario...you need a good 1000 or 2000 miles to break in the bike...I was getting under 26 mpg on my RS/GS/whatever until I hit about 1000 miles...then it went up a couple...added the juicebox and I can control it a little more now...of course, I ride more for fun than for mileage...

Most stations around here buy Premium "vs" Regular at the same ratio that they sell them. No gas sets more that a few days. Most of the Premium gas we can buy here in OK does not contain alcohol.:doorag:

I run 91/93 octane = Makes me feel better, And if i feel better my Spyder feels better. I don't worry about the extra cost, In the grand scheme of things once your in the box :yikes: the little extra spent don't mean a thing.

Also reg. and prem. are mix at the pump, If the guy in front of you gets 87 and you get 91/93 you'll have a little 87 with your 91/93.

Basically the higher the octane rating the more resistant the fuel is to spontaneously combust (auto or pre-ignition) under pressure (i.e. in high compression engines). At 9:1 compression it doesn't seem there should be any benefit in running 91+ in the Spyder. When I tried 91 in the Spyder I saw no noticeable difference.
