• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Taking Spyder back in for more service. Steering is still great at all speeds but leaving phone store got another scroll on dash, "Check Engine". Parked it, took off cover, checked oil and looked for other leaks and found none. Started it and scroll was gone. Took it out on the highway doing 65 to 70, ran great and called service when I got to nieces house. Had new phone with no charge. Service said sounds like it needs another update. Just how many updates are there? Leo said 3 that he knows of and had second done after Christmas.

Also living in a salty enviorment, less than a 1000' from the Gulf of Mexico. Would it be wise to rinse off the engine and other componants with fresh water? I do that to my Honda Outboard, taking the cover off to rinse down the engine, whether I take it out or not, once a month?

I have bad GPS triggering the "check engine" light ;).

Are you sure it's a "Check Engine" light and not your Radar Detector going off? :roflblack:

But seriously, I'm sorry to hear it's back to the Service Department. Still, the GPS is an easy fix.....IF the part is in!

uhhhhh . . .

. . . . . did you check the fuses and make sure they were seated properly?

I hope you have a fast turn-around on it.

Thanks Tom and everyone, this dealership is great when it comes to service. Had the DPS replaced and back to me in 9 days. Took longer to get the new DPS in, than they thought.

I didn't check the fuses and after talking to Leo the service manager again on Thursday he said, a new update has come out and that's most likely the problem. He said once we get it hooked up, we will see what comes up. He said it takes about an hour and has the parts in stock, if its a sensor.

The check engine light was on when it was scrolling on my dash and both went off after stopping and checking it out and never came on again. I road it Thursday before the wind started to pick up and some rain moved in and didn't see either the light or scroll.

That was back in 2008...:roflblack:

Can you do us a favor, and find out what this new update is and when it was actually issued? Since I am still searching for a new dealer I do not get notified when updates are available right now.

Time to take my own advice . . . . .

Beautiful day here - sunny and into the 60s ( in the sun ). I went about 60 miles and after a muddy jaunt down about 4 miles of dirt road ( well, they called it a road ) when I got back on the pavement I got my first ever Scrolling Message" - just what you describe. Check Engine - Check DPS and a variety of the indicators lit. "Hmmmmmmm, its about 40 miles home", I thought. (that is the censored version) "I am way out in the NM sticks." (that is really censored)
Stopped and turned it off, had a cigarette, looked cool, looked at my cellphone [no signal], looked around. . . . . .yup, I have not seen another car in the last 20 minutes - then turned it back on. All the messages and indicators were still there. I turned it off again. :cus:

Time for serious and radical action, "follow your own advice":yikes:. Opened the hood, pressed down on the fuse box and heard a 'click'. Took off the fuse cover, pressed all the fuses down, just to make sure and then restarted it. No Messages scrolling. No indicators glowing. Checked for other lose things. Good to go!

I am guessing that dirt road was the culprit, it was rough, I probably took it too fast - OK, I went way too fast and was crouched up on the foot pegs in order not to be bounced off. It was a blast, but it is possible that the fuse cover was not 100% locked in from when the shop worked on it and replaced my DPS.

Zipped around the rest of the day, more dirt roads, expressway, country lanes, a great Fry Bread 'sandwich' from a roadside stand on the reservation - nothing but smiles.

I really hope your messages are as easy to clear. Your posting was the first thing (almost) that I thought of when the messages came on and the indicators lit up - it was exactly as you described. To me, one of the most valuable things from this forum is to read both the negative and the positive and put myself in that position. With all the help and tips that are given, there is usually something to try or consider that I would not have immediately thought of - even including my own advice.

So, while a bunch of you are frozen in and under feet of snow - you all got a very big smile of appreciation and from deep within the Land Of Enchantment, I am sending you all clear roads and sky with temps in the 70's. It is guaranteed, though it may take it a couple months to get to the East Coast and over the Canadian border.

Glad to hear it was nothing more serious than a possible loose fuse.

Thanks for posting that, as it will give the rest of us something to think about if it ever happens to us as well.

Glad you remembered. Any time there are multiple warnings cascading across the screen, suspect loose relays!

Spyderwolf, I asked Leo the service manager at my dealership on Saturday afternoon about the updates that are out and he said 3. He said you should have been notified by BRP and I told him I wasn't. I did read about it on this site, sometime back and he said that's the best place to get info at Spiderlovers.com. He said he gets a lot of information from the posts on here and than checks with BRP. He said with these new machines, the more I know about them the better, I can serve our customers.

He also told me that another owner had Check DPS scrolling across his dash and instead of sending him on his way, like they did with me. They kept the Spyder and gave him a ride home. He said I learned a lot after yours locking up and my biggest concern was his safety. We got right on his and replaced the DPS unit, getting it back to him in just over a week.

I'm taking mine in Monday morning and will find out what it is and post it after I get home.

Tom, I just got back from a chilly 50 degree ride and before I left, I checked all the fuses. They were all in tight and on my ride, I didn't get the engine light or the scroll, so it must be the update or a sensor. Once they get it hooked up, they will know and like I said in a previous post, they have the sensors in stock.

I take it in Monday morning and I hope its warmer than it was today. Once I get across the bridge to Panama City, it should be warmer there than on the beach. We are getting a 5 to 10 mph breeze off the Gulf of Mexico and that contributes to the chill, plus creating my own windchill at 45 to 50 mph. I was going to take it out on the highway but ditched that idea after my fingers were starting to get cold. I do wear gloves year round but the ones I have are best for warmer weather. Going outside before I left I thought what a nice day for a long ride. I was gone just over an hour but for me any time, I can get out on the Spyder and get my fix, I feel a lot better.

I'll remember the next time to check the fuses if I see more scrolls, thanks for the tip.

I took my Spyder for service Monday and it was the oxygen sensor that was causing the Check Engine scroll and engine lite to come on and they replaced it. Everything else checked out alright and it took about an hour.

It was waiting for me outside as they tried to talk me into a trade for an RT. I said straight trade mine for this and no extra payments? you got a deal. Will the salesman said, you know it doesn't work that way and I told him, I'm happy with what I have now. Than other onlookers asked questions about the Spyder and I told them how much fun I have with it and the only way to find out if it's right for you, is to take a demo for a ride.

Later in the day I went to Walmart and while putting bags in the trunk, a guy on a Harley trike pulled up alongside. He said for me that there, is the bike for me. He had the conversion done on his Harley after an accident and loosing his left leg. I told him they had an RT with a trailer on the showroom floor and his eyes lit up. He asked when I saw it? I told him this morning, when I had to have an update done. He said in the morning I'm gonna have to go take a look at it. Who knows? The next time you see me, I may be on it and the next time your at the dealer, you may see the Harley on the floor.

Several more onlookers stopped and asked for the money which is best buy? My new friend, who I've seen several times on the beach and over in Panama City, said the Spyder. The conversion for the Harley is just over $10,000 and a new one starts at around $30.000. He said the RS Spyders like this one starts at around $16,000, with the RT at around $22 to $26,000.

I said you've done your homework and he said I've been checking out the Spyder's for awhile, than heard about the RT and took the demo for a ride. He said he loved the way the SE had the thumb shifter and liked the way the handlebars came back towards you and the seat is great for me and with all the extras, it's just what I need for traveling. He said yep, gonna have to go checkout the one with the trailer in the morning. Than said I'm sure, I'll see you around and ride safe! Time for me to head back over the bridge and home, to do some number crunching.

The look on his face, told me that the next time I see him, he'll be on a black RT-S with matching trailer.

Glad you are back on the road again!

You need to ask Will if he will split his commission on your sales. :D
