• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

What actually needs replacing when changing the rear tire?

According to my operator's guide:

"When the rear wheel is removed or re-placed, perform the following:

  • - Replace rear wheel nut;
  • - Replace and lubricate the bearing seal of the rear axle;
  • - Replace and lubricate rear axle O-ring;
  • - Check rubber damper condition. Replace if damaged of broken."

The first rear tire was replaced by dealer, so I have no way to tell what was replaced. I replaced the second tire and:

  • replaced the wheel nut (came with thread locker);
  • replaced and lubed the 2 bearing seals;
  • replaced and lubed the rear axle o-ring; and
  • the rubber dampers were good.

Does everyone replace all this when replacing rear tire?

FYI Original Kenda tire was replaced at 10355 miles, and it was scary on wet pavement by then.
The second Kumho (28psi) was replaced at 14890 miles, still serviceable but getting thin and done at a convenient time.
The third Vredestein (17psi) currently has 23,683 miles and will be changed after my upcoming SD trip.

It is well known that the KUMHO, although an AUTO tire, isn't the best choice for a replacement, and by using 28 PSI, that meant it was over-filled by 10 PSI ... The Vredestein's are a great choice... Mike :thumbup:

The only thing that has to be replaced is the tire. All the other parts can be reused unless you find a defect.

:agree: .... I have many, many Mods on my 14 RT ..... and have had almost every part removed and then re-used many, many times ..... so far all the nuts bolts , washers , "O" rings etc. are Original OEM ...... everything is still tight and not leaking .... maybe after wrenching for 65+ years, I've learned a skill :dontknow: ......Mike :thumbup:

I found that the o-ring was damaged from the factory the first time I replaced my rear tire. Since then I make sure I have one on hand just in case I'm changing a tire and need it.

At almost 80,000 miles I will be placing my 4th rear tire on my Spyder. All those parts are factory original to my Spyder and continue to work well and do their jobs. When I pull the rear tire this time I will have those pieces on hand, just in case.

how many miles do you expect Vredestein Sprint rear tire to last? I have Vredestein Quatrack 5 on the front which I expect to get 40 k miles out of.

No, and it is very doubtful that the dealer did.

I would not use the Sprint. It has 2 major drawbacks. It's a summer tire, which I do not recommend. And it is VERY Expensive! Go with the Vredestein Quatrac if you're going to go that direction. Though it is somewhat narrower than other options. It is a great rear tire.
