There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. DESS Key code again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would not reset by turning ignition off and on 4 or 5 times. After a few hours it did reset on its own. The Check Key does not come on now, bike has just been sitting though. I am pretty sure if you rode it the Check Key would come back. I would not trust it at all like this.
We are busy through Sunday, so taking it down to Lamont on Monday to have it turned off and go over a couple other items before Maggie Valley.

rick_w,
Question,
Was there any electronic equipment( keys, cellphones) or any other devices next to the spyder keys?

That is a good thing that the Check Key doesn't come on now. I would not trust it either.

Have you tried the other spyder key?

Interesting info.

OK.

For reference information. There are no type of cell phones or anything close to it and when it was locked out with the check key the other key we have for it would not work either.

OK. Thanks for the info.

Here are my thoughts: Sounds like a chip problem in both keys.

While not impossible, the likelihood of two failed keys vs a failing DESS system seems very, very unlikely.

Suspect Lamonster will get Ricks Spyder sorted out with minimal fuss by disabling the DESS.

You are right, not the keys. The spare key has never been used and will work right now. We are just getting it turned off.
I think we will see more of these failures on the newer bikes sooner or later.
We have talked to a few customers over the years that have had absolute nightmares because of this issue and being stuck places.

Agreed.
I disabled DESS on our 2014 awhile ago.
Since I have BUDS and BUDS2, I offered locally to disable DESS for a reasonable cost. Simply wanting to break even on license costs. Much to my surprise, no one took me up on it. If DESS fails or acts up locally, or while traveling, it will be far more costly, but whatever.

Yes, disable DESS and don’t look back.

In 2015 when I had my 2nd DESS module and 2nd antenna replaced since then I have not had the DESS error show up.

I have a 2014 RTS-SE6.

The only reliable fix for this DESS Check Key Error is to disable the DESS in BUDS by dealer. We had this problem with our 2020 F3 SE6 Limited. Dealer replaced the DESS and the antenna, but the problem returned. After the third time trailering the bike to the dealer, we requested that they disable the DESS, which is a redundant security system anyway. This solved the problem. It is unconscionable that a company with the resources and expertise of BRP cannot get this right.

daveschulz,

What is the part number of the DESS?

Also, what is the antenna part number?

The above info is for other spyder owners.

BRP needs to get a grip on this, and get it fixed ASAP!

710004916 DESS Module - $229.49
219800373 DESS Antenna - $72.41
I agree, it is unbelievable that BRP has been unable to deal with this properly. Given the DESS is a redundant anti-theft system we decided to disable it. This should not be the only reliable solution.

daveschulz,
Before you had the DESS disabled did you have the dealership open a case with BRP?

The DESS module and the Antenna is under MFG and the B.E.S.T warranty.

There has to be a better reliable solution to this DESS Problem.

Thanks for the part numbers.

Deanna

Yes they opened a case with BRP and the module and antenna were replaced under warranty. The problem still happened again. I just want to be able to ride without worrying about getting stuck somewhere. This system is clearly designed and/or manufactured poorly and I have completely lost confidence in BRPs ability to address it with a reliable solution. The sheer volume of reported cases similar to mine on various forums proves that. There should be a complete redesign of the unit and a factory recall to get them all replaced, in my opinion. At this point to have the same faulty design replaced with the same flawed unit again makes no sense.

Hello all, I just installed a new DESS module in my wife's 14 ST Limited. I was under the impression that there was a procedure to make the new module recognize the 2 keys? I installed the module and was ready to go through the process and it seems to have just automatically recognize both keys. Is that normal now? Thanks.

The key recognition is performed in the ECU, the engine control module. The DESS simply communicates with the key to verify a valid key ID format, and sends the key ID to the ECU which then compares it to the list of authorized IDs that is programmed into the ECU. Since you did not change key IDs or reprogram the key list in the ECU, you were good to go!

daveschulz,

Yes, BRP should do a complete redesign and a recall.

I have a 2014 RTS-SE6 and I had the DESS problem happen to me twice (as I posted in this thread). Since I have had my 2nd DESS module and antenna/switch replaced (both times were under warranty) I have not had the DESS problem (and my bike is now out of warranty).

I am glad that your dealership opened up a case with BRP.

What year is your Spyder?
What Spyder model do you have?

GearHd,

I haven't heard about the new module and recognizing the 2 new keys.

I don't know if that is normal.

Will someone chime in that has had the new module and 2 new keys installed on there spyder.

:agree: Back in 15 I had my DESS module re-placed .... both original keys worked fine ..... Mike

This is what I get in my service manual. Sorry for the sideways picture.

Also, one odd thing I noticed on the old original module was it had something that looked like a cylindrical magnet zip tied to it that a couple of the wires looped through it. That just looked like a major afterthought to me.
