Key broke, what are my options..

Turned the key to open the hood and snapped right in two... Luckily was able to get the 2nd piece out

Had the bike for less than a year, should have gotten a spare but did NOT

see pic, so what are my options, get a new key from dealership etc.. Can they scan the key while broke?.. didnt know what they use?

If the dealer cant order a key using the vin, take the parts to a locksmith and have him make a key from the parts. Easy for a locksmith to do. Then take the cut key to the dealer and they can order and cut a key from the locksmith key.

The process to get a duplicate key is this; Get a key blank from your dealer, take that blank to a locksmith and have it cut to match the original, than take the new cut key back to the dealer to have it programmed to your bike. So, I would take your broken key to a good locksmith to see if it has any possibility of being duplicated. If so, get a new blank and proceed. If not, I'm afraid you need to replace the entire key locking barrel assembly. Good luck..... Jim

Agree with others:thumbup:Hopefully you find good lock smith willing to try :thumbup: good idea to go ahead & get them copy a chip-less blank as well; Ilco X-270 Blank works. some bevel the corners on key head so will push into ignition better for the other operations. & have a good spare somewhere safe:clap::bbq: not your week:roflblack:

This is why I connected a wire to the frunk and seat latches and NEVER use the key to open them.

:agree: ....It's one of the first things I did after I started buying Spyders .... IMHO the ignition switch should only do one thing .... start and stop the engine .....Mike :thumbup:

Get two made. You'll sleep better when traveling far from home. If you bought your spyder new from your dealer, they owe you one.

If you can get the Ilco X-270 made try placing the chip part next to the switch and try starting it with the copy, not sure why that wouldn't work if it's close to the switch. That way you can ride it to the dealer to get a new one made.

UPDATE: went to the locksmith this morning, was able to get a cheap $4 key from the broken key, good guys, used the chip from the other key and worked like a charm

They are only charging $65 for a complete new chipped key cut and all, but they need the bike there to do the job

Will be going there soon, while I was there, I got my Kia Soul key cut and mini cooper... Why did I chance all my cars with one key......Ugh!

every year a group of us do a guy trip. I always give my spare key to one of the other guys to keep for me. When the wife and I do a trip she puts the extra key on a lanyard and wears around her neck. Never leave home without the spare key.

Say you want to leave the engine running and unlock/lock a trunk. I've done that many times.

That's where an Ilco X270 blank comes in handy. Have one cut to match your chipped key and bevel it as shown in the picture to fit all the way down in the ignition lock. It will fit in you wallet or around your neck and will do everything but allow you to start your Spyder.

If you want to use spare key (not chipped) you'll have to bevel square bottom edges to be able to push key down to unlock fronk or seat

Cut back the lower corners of the head so it fits down into the ignition. The top of the ignition barrel is somewhat below the trim around it.

The head of the X270 key is rectangular. Lay a chipped key on top of the cut X270 and scribe the angles circled in yellow in the picture. I did it on my bench grinder and it took longer for the key to cool than it took to grind the bevels.
