Buffeting

1st nice long (ish) ride at highway speeds today. I noticed a bit of helmet buffeting (windscreen is stock). What's suggested 1st? New windscreen or some of those over or under the mirror add on deflectors?

If a windscreen is suggested, what's a good windscreen to get? I've used recurve windscreens on other 2 wheeled bikes and liked them but not sure who makes those for the Spyder. I don't think I'd want to go any taller so a recurve would fool the wind into thinking the windscreen is taller. I'm only assuming wider is also the way to go.

TIA

I'm a huge fan of the X-Creens which can add or subtract wind, and also seem to break it up enough to take away the buffeting.

I have a generic version on my Nomad. I dont care for it but I suppose I can take it off the Nomad and try it on the Spyder, just to see if it makes a difference. Honestly, I wouldn't keep it on the Spyder.

My suggestion is to replace your current windshield to the tallest F4 customs windshield they make for your Spyder. The buffeting will drastically reduce itself with a taller /wider windshield.

+1 for an F4 w/s, but get a height you can see over, not through. If they offer a flip, get it. Wind will pass over your head.

ANOTHER vendor is 7Jurock. I have the slightly taller and a reverse curve, plus wider. I got a RDL seat and it put me up about 1.5", helmet buffeting until I got taller windshield

I have a 16" 7Jurock with a flip on my F3L and it's great at all speeds and I can see well over it. It uses the original hardware - I like that.

Before you lay out $$ for a new windshield have you tested your current one at varied heights from full down to full up?

For a few bucks and a few minutes you can cut in a Goldwing style VENT in your existing shield. Opening the vent will move the bubble of still air up and over your head. My wife can tell immediately whether the vent is open or closed. An added benifit is better cooling during the summer ( when we ryde the most).

The original post is in the Spyder RT section, is the windscreen you mentioned available for his RT series?
My goof! I suggest going to their web site - that will provide an answer to your question.

Already have what I deem the best windscreen on our RTS. An F4 tinted in standard height. Thanks for your concerns though.

I highly recommend what he posted. And get one with the center vent! If you have the money, also get the side wings. They are awesome!! Tom :spyder:

I have, Jay. Much better with the windscreen all the way up but I can still feel buffeting on top of my head. Not the end of the world but I'd prefer to have a nice dead air space w/a screen all the way up.

I'm not very handy, to be honest. If I cut into my windscreen, I'd probably end up w/3 pieces and the vent would be sideways. :)

I have had very good results with Madstad on my bikes including my F3s

Here's what I've found based on everyones suggestions. The Madstad doesn't appear to be available for the RT (at least it's not showing the RT on thier website) so that's out. The 7Jurock only shows it goes up to 2017 although that could be that they haven't updated their site in a while (well, 3 years). The 7Jurock is under $200. Lamonster has a Freedom windscreen w/a flip for $300. The F4 w/all the boxes checked (stock height, wider, vented and tinted) is $435! Good grief! It doesn't appear to be offered w/a flip/recurve. Maybe the F4 is worth the dough but that's a lot of baking. (See what I did there? "dough". "baking". :) ) Finally, there's a Show Chrome windscreen from Slingmods for $150. It doesn't appear to have any options but is a couple inches wider.

I've never heard of the Freedom windscreen from Lamonster but I know he sells quality stuff. The Show Chrome one doesn't look like much of an improvement over stock other than the width. That leaves the 7Jurock assuming the 2018 mounting is the same as the 2017. I haven't emailed them yet hoping someone here can give me a quicker answer. I've had 7Jurock windscreens on other bikes and think they're good quality however they don't seem to offer a vent. Finally, there's the uber pricy F4. They don't offer a recurve so I think I'd have to get the taller screen. In the middle of summer when it's freakin' hot out, I want as much air as I can get. I've never had a windscreen w/a vent so I'm not sure if that would cure/eliminate the NC summer heat blues.

Monk....Call 7Jurock, they are very pleasant and helpful over the phone. That's how I ended up with one of theirs. The F3L comes with a too short 12" w/s. I took an 8-1/2 X 11" piece of cardboard, like that on the bottom of note pads, and clamped it to the top of the w/s using rubber tipped spring clamps. I would raise and lower it until I found the height I want that allows me to see over it. That added 4" to the OEM w/s and I ordered a 16" with a flip. I couldn't be happier with the results.

If you get a taller F4 customs windshield then get a set of air wings to direct wind towards you. Great when weather gets hot.

You have the Comfort Seat on now too, correct? Am just curious because we're pretty close height-wise and I never feel buffeting except in extreme crosswinds, and I ride with the windshield up just a skosh from bottom stop.
