• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. ZUMO GPS dies on engine start

I have a 2015 RTL 22,000 miles with a 590 ZUMO GPS. When I start the engine and while waiting on the computers to wake up, the GPS comes alive as per normal.
When the computer is awake, I press mode button, then push engine start. While engine is cranking most of the time the GPS dies. I then press the power button on the back of the GPS and it comes on again. When it does come alive, the screen is dim and requires going to settings and each time the brightness is on 1/2 setting,
I move it to full bright each time and then the GPS works flawless after that.
Any suggestions, this doesn’t seem normal and is very frustrating ??

This. Great GPS units; crappy battery.
You can charge it externally with a standard USB phone charger.
all needed cords should have came with it, you will probably have a port under battery cover. Otherthing to try is go ahead & crank bike then attach GPS see if that works better first.

The battery in my 590 would not charge from the computer. Works fine when mounted on the RTL, so I thought that the battery might be bad. Purchased a new one and still would not charge when attached to the computer. Called Garmin and initially they said that the problem was an aftermarket battery. Told them that it was a Garmin battery and the gentleman said that it was probably something internal in the 590. Since the Spyder is a '15, the unit was out of warranty, but I could send it in along with $180 and they would send me a refurbished unit. Not doing it.

Some computer USB ports do not have enough output to charge the unit and will not show charging when hooked up. Many times it will still trickle charge the battery so charging will take days. It could also be a faulty USB cable.

The ports on a computer are not MEANT to supply power, even though they do a little.

Try to charge it with a stand-alone USB charger. I bet it will work much better.......unless your battery is shot.

I had it on a stand-alone USB charger for 3 days and it still wouldn't charge! That was after it had been attached to the computer for 2 days. Both old and new batteries.

Is there any other detail that you forgot to mention ?

Seems to me like the only likely guess left is that the battery is not making good contact somewhere.
Maybe inside the unit even.

When changing my 660 on the cord FYI it automatically turns on & shows a pick of a desktop tower & cord. Does yours?:dontknow: may wanna contact Garmin

Thanks everybody for the helpful suggestions.
I cleaned the contact as per the video and it has seemed to do the trick.
I will let you know after the next road trip.

I was having these same exact issues with my 590 Zumo since it was new but getting worse lately. I wached the video posted above and did what it said to do and it is now better than ever. Thanks for posting!
