• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. oil question

Guy at the dealer ship told me the spyder would take 3-1/2 qt. of oil when changing oil and filter. I did that and my dip stick reads 1/4" above the full line, when I screw in the dipstick. If I just put the dip stick in and NOT screw it down. Oil is right on the full mark. My question is 3 or 3-1/2 qt.:dontknow:

I think I've been putting 4 liters in mine every oil change. That puts the oil level right at the bottom of the dipstick when the engine is warm. That would equal about 4.2 quarts. Are you sure you're getting all the oil drained?

Agree with You

Sounds like maybe he could be draining the reservoir only.....maybe he is not draining the motor??
3... 3 1/2 qts.not enough.I go 4.12 like you.

I started up the bike let it warm up to the third mark. Turned the engine off waited a minute, then started it up and ran for about 10-15 seconds. I thought all the oil would have drained out. I left the system opened for hours before I installed the filter and oil. What am I doing wrong. This bike is like no other bike I've worked on. :chat:

This is a "dry sump" engine... thus the exterior oil tank. However, there is a drain in the engine's crankcase which also must be drained to get it all out. In addition, that plug is magnetic and should be checked/cleaned.

getting off the subject for a second

My relay went bad when I tried the hi beams. Finally got a relay from Delcity.com. But replacing relay did not cancel limp mode and all the fault messages, but my headlights are working again. Do i need to disconnect the battery to get the fault codes to reset? Thanks for all the help.

Before someone else tries to changes the the subject again. Can you give me an idea where this crankcase drain plug is. I know where the bottom of the crankcase is. What side, and front or back. So I will know next time. Right now I'll just feel for it. :roflblack:

I guess I'll put in here that the SE has two filters and holds more oil yet than the SM. In case some one else comes along with same question.

Right near the oil filter, bottom of the engine.

not to change the subject but what weight and brand of oil. i was looking and red line but can not find a 5w40.

Dealer gave me Mobil 1 V-Twin motorcycle oil 20W50.. Because they were out of BRP oil. If it's wrong it's there fault.
I would absolutely not run this heavy weight oil in there for any length of time. You need to get it out of there before you chance ruining some bearing surfaces. Along the way, I would seek a new dealer. This one should not be in business! Wrong oil, didn't drain the entire thing... This dealer is bad news!!!

:agree:Many dealers may substitue 10W-40 for the required 5W-40, but 20W-50 is not a good choice. This does not sound like a very trustworthy dealer.

:agree:20W-50 might be OK in the desert SW in the dead of summer, but now that winter is coming on I'd get that out of the Spyder pronto.
