There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hi,
I've just bought a Spyder 2011 Model SE5, there is one thing I've noticed that it makes a high clunk / dunk sound when I'm shifting, is this normal? Or is it me that shifts on the wrong rpm`

Sorry for my english, im a young fellow from Norway :)

Hi Erik,

Re: it makes a high clunk / dunk sound when I'm shifting, is this normal?

My '08 CLUNKS and it still bothers me after 3 yrs of riding it. I only get the 'clunk' when going into reverse or first gear.

You are doing fine.

We were all your age once.

I would chalk it up to "newness"

So ... I am reasonably sure continued use / practice will remove that tendency.

Remember also that most riders over-rev their motorcycles when shifting and this is most pronounced in the first two gears. I also fall back into this bad habit when I am tired or distracted.

There is a video dealing with this problem on YouTube by Kevin, a licensed motorcycle instructor who operates MCRider. I believe the short video is titled "Do you have bad habits on your motorcycle?", but I know there are several series of videos specifically addressing shifting habits.

You might be able to somewhat minimize the "clunk" by shifting at "neutral throttle" but you won't eliminate it completely.
That's just the way the transmission works.

Going from N to 1 or R is the worst; especially when the engine is cold.

I have a 2012 RS SE5 and it shifts smooth as butter. Doesn't matter if I rev to redline or shift at 4000 RPM. The initial shift into 1st there is a "clunk" and also when shifting into reverse. As long as my oil level is correct shifting is smooth and quick in all other gears up and down. I'd recommend maintaining 4000 RPM or above in all gears. Also, don't let off the throttle when you shift up or down like you would if you had a clutch. Keep steady pressure on the throttle and shift. You might notice the throttle turning itself a bit to adjust.

My 2011 SE5 clunks loudest N to 1st and reverse, but also loud into 2 slight less into 3, 4,and 5 but non the less I hear it and feel it on the footboard. The clunk going up thru the gears sometimes sounds like a chirp. I noticed when cold going up thru the gears (into 2,3,4,5)clunks less than when the oil is fully warm.
one thing I do to keep the clunk noise to more of a min. Is get on the throttle harder right before a shift seems to help out.
I always wondered if there is an adjustment needed to tame the clunk noise down. Mine has 37k on it and doesn't matter if I use BRO oil or amsoil, clunk is the same.
Maybe A BRP mechanic can answer that last paragraph.

Maybe the SE trans is different , because I could keep the Spyders at Max RPM's , full throttle , while I was drag racing my RSS ............ Took a first place with it :clap:...........Mike

And what, pray tell, does that have to do with any noises it makes when you do that ??
