Throttle swap

Has anyone ever done or had experience with swapping the throttle on an 2014 RT-S SE6 to a left-hand control?

A bit bit of background. In Dec/15, I was diagnosed with ALS. It seriously affects my neck, lungs and right arm making precise throttle control difficult. My legs still work so brake is ok. I ride with a stiff neck brace to control the head drop and keep a battery-pack ventilator in the Frunk.

i would like to swap to a left hand or foot throttle control. Any suggestions?

if I can't get this done, the wife says she's driving and I'll have the ride co-pilot. Don't like that alternative as I've seen her drive.

Recently there was a thread with something similar. But moved the controls to the right and used a sea doo throttle..lever action. Would something like that work ? Like the thumb throttles on atv's also. :dontknow:

I know a lady in Michigan that has had her ,I think GS, converted to a foot pedal speed throttle similar to gas pedal in car. She can do anything the rest of us do. PM me and I will contact her to get in touch with you.

ISCI is a Montgomery, AL based company that makes the hand brake a number of Spyder owners have purchased, and I know they've installed some throttles on the left side for people with issues on their right hand.

Thumb throttles like those on ATVs are extremely fatiguing and not meant for "normal" riding of appreciable distance. They're only used because regular grip throttles when riding crazy terrain would constantly throw off your control. Thumb throttles provide precise control independently of your fists which are gripping every which way as you navigate rough stuff. In fact, there are regular grip throttle kits available for ATVers who do ride smooth terrain most of the time. When I ride the dirt roads on my quad, my right thumb gets sore within half an hour.

You're very welcome! I highly admire your Keep On Rydin' attitude and wish you the best in finding a throttle solution. One of my horseback riding buddies continued riding with ALS for years, and I'm certain it helped him stave off its progression. A good attitude atop a good horse (or Spyder) can go a long way. The trick with these new bikes, is that they've got a "throttle by wire" system.
A throttle position sensor (in the twist grip), tells the computer how much throttle is desired...
The computer then figures out how much fuel to kick into the throttle bodies...

I'm not saying that it can't be done: just that it might take a bit of true creativity.

As Bob says the complicating factor is the fact that the throttle is all electronic. What you might be able to do is buy a right hand grip assembly, maybe even from a salvage yard. It has what is called the Throttle Accelerator Sensor. Mount the grip somewhere under the tupperware and operate it with a foot control. Use some sort of mechanical connection from the foot pedal to the grip to operate it. Connect the harness from it to the bike harness where the original harness plugs in.

I'm finding out it's not as simple as re-routing a throttle cable. Thanks for the help.

It has what is called the Throttle Accelerator Sensor. Mount the grip somewhere under the tupperware and operate it with a foot control. Very good suggestion. It will give the conversion guys a plane to start or at least a idea of how this thing works. I didn't know how it worked so I'm even better informed. :bowdown:
