• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Been searching and can't find info about recommended oil....

Here's the full scoop from pg. 122 of your owner's manual. If you follow it and particulatly avoid the AAPI SM/ILSAC GF4 category you're not going to go wrong. Listen to all of us engine oil anal guys and you can really fog your brain.

"Recommended Engine Oil
The same oil is used for the engine, gearbox, clutch, and the HCM in theSE5 model.Use the XPS SYNTHETIC BLEND OIL(SUMMER GRADE) (P/N 293 600 121)or a 5W 40 semi-synthetic (minimum)or synthetic motorcycle oil meetingthe requirements for API service SL,SJ, SH or SG classification. Alwayscheck the API service label on the oilcontainer.
NOTICE To avoid damaging theclutch, do not use a motor oil meetingthe API service SM or ILSAC GF-4classification. Clutch slippage willoccur."

Bajaron.....site sponsor

Can you provide a link where you order from?

Go to site sponsors on the home page. BajaRon is the "go to guy" for most things Spyder. Not only does he know the Spyders. He has great prices and his customer service is PLATINUM. Heck he even sells some great ryding clothes. I always get my oil change kits from Ron. Also mucho other stuff from the famous Bajaron Sway Bar to my First Gear ryding gear. And throw in some break pads, etc etc etc.

Yep check him out...you won't be sorry. I laugh when you say you live 40 miles from your dealer...never had one that close....closest now is 4 hours and at least one (usually two) mountain passes depending on which dealer I go to...I personally consider it a great ryde.

Another Oil Thread: I knew that this would happen! :D

For the record: I prefer Canola oil. It makes my onion rings taste better! :roflblack:

We'll... peanut oil makes MikeSells potato chips the best in the world! [emoji39]

...so I don't have to buy BRP. My dealer is also 40 miles away... if I want to buy a synthetic oil what kind, type, weight, specs, should I buy? I saw that many use Amsoil, Valvoline, Castrol, and others but I am new to Spyders (2010 RT SM5) and want to be sure to get the right kind. I am not trying to start a "the oil I use is the best one" kind of debate - I just want a few options so I can find one locally.

The search function here doesn't accept 3 letter words so that complicates finding posts about oil. However, if you put this string "synthetic oil site:spyderlovers.com" into Google you'll come up with over 1000 hits. No idea who many threads they are from, but it's a lot. Happy, bleary eyed, reading!!

Rotella T6?

I also have the 2010 RT SM5, and I've had good luck using Shell's Rotella T-6, 5W-40. It's readily available and at a good price. I get filters from BajaRon, or from my dealer.

I thought that the Rotella T6 was a diesel oil? Is it ok to use with 2014 RT 1330?

DIESEL OIL ?????

I thought that the Rotella T6 was a diesel oil? Is it ok to use with 2014 RT 1330?
It may be OK for Diesel engines and It certainly is a GOOD oil for the 1330 Ace engine ...... but do NOT use it in the V-twin 990-998 series engines ........ Personally I have found the Valvoline 4 T stroke ( full syn ) mtc oil to be much better and about the same price at Walmart .........Mike

2014 ST Limited uses Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 exclusively. Easy to find, very reasonably priced, excellent shear strength.

I use and recommend Valvoline 4 T stroke ( for motorcycles in Silver container ) four qts-10w/40 with one qt.20w/50 for added viscosity. This is Full Syn Oil and has the lowest Moly behind Amsoil, but it sells for a lot less ......on-line @ Walmart......... Mike

Mike

You always seem to find the deal on this oil at wal mart...whenever I need it its full price $9 a quart or so. If you see it on sale, kindly post here on SL and give us less lucky folks a heads up on the good deal. Thanks!

And

And while its an excellent oil for the 1330s and MANY other applications, its use is specifically recommended against by BRP. It does NOT meet the specs for the 998 engines. This is why we will not install it in the older bikes and keep the Valvoline on hand for those.

This year I am trying 10W-40 ATV full Syn oil from Mercury marine. it listed as Wet-Clutch safe. I always send for an analysis, so we will see what they say. Available @ Wal-Mart MUCH cheaper than most. In 56 years I've tried them all. Last using Royal Purple for a few years like Vavoline Motorcycle,
