1000 mile road trip

Before leaving I put some water wetter in the Smokster. Knew it was going to be hot in Sacramento. Did 1000 miles to and from.
Coming back it was 100 degrees going 100 mph. The Spyder never missed a beat and ran at 3 bars with an occasional 4th bar.
I on the otherhand was melting.
Another great trip with the Spyder.

Did realize with these kind of trips and staying in hotels that an alarm is necessary. Anyone have a good suggestion that goes off before they get close to the bike and the experts can diffuse?

Maybe you could put some of the water wetter in your water bottle and take a few sips. Maybe it'll help keep your temp down to three or four bars. :joke: :joke:

One of the Talon alarms has a proximity sensor. I have the alarm and sensor but I have not yet installed it (i've had for a year now). I don't quite know where to put the proximity sensor.

Someday I will install it or maybe just sell it. I haven't made up my mind.

I velcroed mine to the top frame spar just ahead of the seat and below the top colored panel. It covers the seat and the handlebar (GPS and radar detector) areas just fine.

That unit was made by Bulldog but they aren't available at this time. They have a unit for motorcycles (MA2000) that sells for $85. There are a number of other motorcycle units on shopwiki.com

The greatest amount of benefit comes from a combination of reducing the anti-freeze mix from 50/50 to 30/70 (30% anti-freeze) and adding 4 oz of Water Wetter.

Anti-freeze actually inhibits water's ability to exchange heat. Anti-freeze acts somewhat like a thermal blanket keeping heat in your engine rather than removing it.

Manufacturer's make up for this anti-freeze induced inefficiency by putting in a bigger radiator.

If you drain 1 Quart of your existing 50/50 anti-freeze mix, put in 4 oz of Water Wetter and top it off with Distilled Water you'll be right there. You'll need about 28 oz of water ( 4 oz of Water Wetter + 28 oz of water = 32 oz which will replace the 1-Quart you drained out)

There is still enough anti-freeze mix to give you good boil over and freeze coverage (50/50 is actually a bit of overkill) while you get the greatest amount of cooling effect.

A cover for the Spyder while at hotels is a good idea - people think twice before lifting a cover and with the cover in place you don't have to have the alarm set to where you will be getting false alarms. I sleep better when my favorite toy is covered in the parking lot.....

Removing about 1/3 of the coolant and replacing it with water/water wetter will give you protection only to about zero degrees instead of the -34 degrees 50:50 antifreeze provides. Here in Michigan winters can hit -25 on occasion, and almost always go below zero. Even parked in a garage the Spyder could be damaged. An operating vehicle has a bigger problem. Radiator temperatures can go below the air temperature due to the moving air and the heat (cold) exchange effect. That turns the coolant in the radiator to slush or ice, blocks the cooling system, and cooks the motor. If you do this, be careful!

Scorpio alarm with perimeter sensor, plug and play wiring harness for the Spyder. Works great. Warns the intruder and if they don't back off within a few seconds goes to full alarm and sends a signal to the remote.
