2008 Spyder oil consumption

I seem to think my Spyder might be using/losing too much oil. Can anyone give me an idea of how many miles they put on their Spyder before they have to add oil due to the oil level being at the "add" mark.

I added a couple ounces during my 600 mile break in. Since the 600 mile service, and 500 more miles, the oil level has not moved.

First of all, welcome

Oil usage: I think a lot depends on how (1) you broke it in and (2) you drive it... how much you stay at the high rpm side... along with engine braking.

When behaving, I use little or nothing. When not... I can use a half-quart between oil changes. I believe most of it goes to blow-by... into the air box.

I am an Amsoil Dealer, and I recently switched to Amsoil. When I contacted Tech Services at Amsoil about the weight to use they sent me the following response:

Jerry;

Use the AMSOIL Power Sports/Motorcycle Oil of the viscosity you prefer, be it 0W40 AFF, 10W30 MCT, 10W40 MCF or 20W50 MCV.

So, now when I need to add oil I have been adding the 20W50 MCV as I have the lighter weight in it. I figure the heavier weight during the hot summer will be to my advantage. I will revert to the lighter weight when Fall arrives and it is cooler.

The manual calls for 5W40 Synthetic. I would not shy too far away from that - and make darn sure it doesn't have any modifiers in it - (non SM) - otherwise you can have clutch slippage problems.

BRP is now selling a blend for the Spyder - which I'm not a fan of - and there is no weight listed on it ---- just a 'summer' and 'winter' version.:gaah:

My dealer swears by Amsoil 10w40 full synthetic. I've been using it for over 4,000 miles with no problems and no oil usage. :thumbup:

I have a picture on one of these threads of the oil that BRP uses...the rep. strongly advised (obviously) against playing around with the oil type too much...
