When I first piloted my Spyder home, it took some adjusting. I felt like I was going to fall off in the turns. I drove it around the parking lot a few times to get the hang of it. Form me, the key was to squeeze my knees to the tank in the turn. After a day, you're going to LOVE your new Spyder and be well on your way to fun.

You described my situation exactly. I did a few around the parking lots. A mile of side road. Then 70mph for 70 miles home. Four things: 1.) learn acceleration characteristics. 2.) braking. 3.) blinkers. 4.) hi/lo beams. Then don't play with luxury gadgets until you get home. Or set them before you start and focus on learning performance this first ride. Congrats and enjoy!

If the dealer will deliver it at a small or zero charge, I would do it. That's how I got mine from the dealer (70 miles away) and I'm glad I did. Coming from several years on 2-wheels, the body/brain will try to "balance" the Spyder for the first few miles. This can be a very disconcerting feeling, because there is nothing to balance. You end up over-gripping and over-steering for a little while. It really doesn't take too long to get acclimated, but each person is different and if the delivery is free; I'd take advantage of it. I'm sure you could no doubt get it home on back roads, but if there is any highway miles involved where you should maintain 65 or 75 mph.... I wouldn't consider it. Just my opinion... YMMV.

You might want to check with DMV. Here in CT, you are not allowed to ride on Interstate highways, Parkways, or carry a passenger for 90 days after the issuance of a MC endorsement on your license. (I did it anyway). I did take a long test ride before buying, so I felt comfortable on it.

ON YOUR SPYDER " ......I doubt it, so I guess it's OK because it's His Spyder... ..NOT YOURS ....................And If the OP writes another post stating His trip didn't go well (accident , traffic ticket etc.)......What is your answer to Him going to be .........................Mike :thumbup:

Considering the many factors of this situation------ Have it delivered. Learn at your own pace on roads that are safer ( weather, distracted drivers, ect.).

AND READ THE OWNERS MANUAL!!! TWICE---------------

Congrats on your spyder purchase.

I would have can-am dealership deliver the spyder to your house.

After you get the spyder home, go to an empty parking lot and learn how to drive your spyder and get use to the controls, (Brake, shifting etc.) then once you are comfortable with driving your spyder, then ride it on the road.

......Plus something I think was not mentioned .....Mechanical Failure....It is not un-heard of that a Dealer sends out a Spyder that has not been thoroughly checked for proper operation....It would be to BAD for the OP to discover this 3 miles out ..................just sayin.......Mike :thumbup:

Had not been on a MC for 20+ years. Bought my Spyder used in Palm Springs and rode it home 100 miles.

I did however test drive a new Spyder at a dealer so I did have all of 15 minutes experience.

Pretty much the same situation for me.

Test drove an RT Aug of 2014 in OR and purchased an RTL same year in Oct. Mrs. and I picked up the RTL in TX in May of last year and went on a 3500 mile trip to DC and Niagara Falls, then back to Springfield, MO.

I hadn't owned or driven a MC for 20+ years before the Spyder either. Last MC was a Suzuki Cavalcade sold back in '92.

We jumped straight onto the highway and I felt totally comfortable in about 50 miles. It just seemed very natural to me.

I'm not saying that's the best scenario for everyone, but it worked for me.

You will be fine, just take her slow through the curves until you figure her out!! Very easy to drive. Did you test drive any before the purchase?

I enjoyed AND listened to each and every post here. The fact you guys (and girls) took the time to post something was extremely appreciated. I probably shouldn't have titled this thread with the word "CONSENSU as one poster suggested, because regardless of the majority answer, I will do what I feel best FOR ME, when the time comes. The answer really does depend on the type of person, their experiences, their ego, and their fears or lack there of.

I'm NOT in fear, but now being a retired police officer after 30 years and at the age of 62, i'm much less likely to push my luck. I will have the dealer deliver it to my home. It will cost me nothing and it will be in showroom condition while sitting on my driveway. I'm not out to impress anyone. I'm a responsible person and have no desire to put my life, or more importantly anyone else life in danger, because I don't want to admit "i can't handle it".

Half the fun of this Spyder that I haven't gotten yet, has been the information and help I have gotten here on Spyderlovers. Without letting ego influence my decision, I want to be around for a long time to enjoy my new toy. I want to meet the people I have chatted with here. Getting a delivery and then being able to sit on my new bike, read the manual (2 times), play with each control till i have the correct feel for what it does AND doesn't do, won't shorten my excitement or pleasure. PLUS, i'm getting it delivered on the first day of my wife's trip to S. Carolina. So, i'll have a complete 10 days to play and learn and test ride and sleep on the damn thing if i want . . . GUILT FREE!
