• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

A friend of mine who is 86 years old just bought a 2010 RT. He put on 1,200 miles and now the throttle bodies are shutting his bike down. The dealer he bought from says they won't fix it, BRP says there is nothing wrong, and current dealer (mine) says there is no recall and can only clean them. Wasn't there a recall of sorts to address this problem????

Many have had to replace failed throttle bodies on 998s that age but if the bike is out of warranty then its on the owner to cover the bill for repairs.

:agree: Unfortunately; the 2010 RTs had a real problem with these failures... (I lost two sets of throttle-bodies)
Once the bike is out of warranty; it does land squarely on the shoulders of the owner...

Although it never hurts to give BRP a call, and see if they can work out some sort of help...
(My second set was replaced by them, even though the warranty had expired...)

Actually I now have the Throttle Body TSB in hand. It was not a recall but describes TB issues on different years.

Part of the wording says for 2010/11 to have the dealer file a case and they may replace it out of good will since it's a known issue with those years.

I happen to know someone that got it done free on a 2010 out of warranty.

On my 2013 RT, still in warranty, BRP said it is a maintenance issue and not covered by warranty. I had a P1614 code come up in September but have had no problems since. I opted to continue to take my chances since it would have been a $400+ service job to get in and clean the TB when I took it in last month. The tech said he did clean the TB when the heat recall work was done in June. He said a good fuel system cleaning agent (they use one from Yamaha) in the gas would splash and spray back during idling enough to clean the butterflies and shaft. I haven't ridden it since so don't know how well it's going to work out in the long run.

The tech at the dealership who did the BUDs check after the code came up while I was on a trip (and a high idle issue I mentioned in another post back then) said that oil fumes from the crankcase tend to coat the TB ports and cause the butterflies to stick. The TB needs to be cleaned every once in awhile.

 a maintenance issue??? :gaah:
When it finally quits; it's a warranty issue. Keep track of each and every time your bike throws a code at you. Make sure that they know that this is an ongoing issue...

Just had it replaced

I have a 2010 and just had my throttle body replaced. It went while I was in Boerne, and Coyote Powersports contacted BRP. BRP paid for the part, but I have to pay for the labor. I do have an extended warranty with a company that does NOT cover that part Have his dealership contact BRP.

You are correct! The TST I have specifically says this is a maintenance thing for ALL Spyders.
Cleaning the butterfly's is what is said in the TST for a 2012/2013 throwing that code.
It also says to do this for 2010/2011 before putting in a claim for replacement. But it is strangely worded in that area.
I will get it scanned and post it when I get a chance.

I want to thank everyone for their help, hopefully it can help someone else too. I heard last night that my dealer said he would trade in the offending RT on their 2015 RT Demo. Going to cost George more money, but he shouldn't have any more problems. Thanks again, Ron.

Attending spyderfest two springs ago my 2010 RT-S died at the vendors area. I pushed it over to the BRP booth area outside vendors bldg. It was late in the afternoon. The manager looked at the codes and said yes its the throttle body. He said that it would be his last repair of the weekend. Two techs stripped the front of my spyder down to the TB in 20 mins. Pulled the bad TB out, new one in and I was back to running in a total of 50 mins. Total cost.....wait for it.....wait for it......$0.00. The mgr said thats what we do at these events. I figured I saved $1500-$1800. I took out my wallet, had $60, gave it to the two techs.

 Good for you! :2thumbs:

Those techs sound good enough to work on either a NASCAR pit crew, or an area of extreme urban blight...

Good news up date. My dealer installed new throttle bodies, replaced the plugs, and did a complete service for George. Total cost to him was $300. Saved him thousands of dollars in the process. The dealer is Donahue Super Sports in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. If ever in the area stop in and meet them.
