seems 5000 miles were bit much after first oil change with royal purple

on my recent 4 days trip, on 3rd day spyder started pms-ing. i checked coolant(dealer repaired coolant leak just before i left), right at where should be, oil was bit low so topped off and ran a little better.
i checked the miles on last oil change and it was 5000 miles ago on april 16th:gaah:
where did the miles go?
i changed oil last night and it's back to normal again:yes::yes::yes:
my intention was to change at 3000 miles(per rp website) and then take it to 5000 miles after the initial switch to royal purple.

this was the first oil change i have done on any vehicle and 50 bucks labor honda of hollywood is charging is well worth it. i am sure next one will go much smoother. i will be doing all oil changes myself regardless. dealer left a note on my spyder saying it's unsafe to ryde because of royal purple oil and kumho tire:( but i understand why they did it. they have to cover their own butt first incase i crash and try to blame them

The RP wouldn't have anything to do with 'safety' - but the tire would.

The new BRP oil they are using is a 10W40 Blend. Nuff said.

What were the pms-ing symptoms. I am approaching 5000 miles on RP and all is well. Plan on leaving for the Nova Scotia with new oil and doing the whole trip without oil change...curious how that's going to turn out. Will carry extra oil (1/2 qt) just in case. Will check my level before I change the oil next month to see what's missing since switching to RP. I read what your dealer said about the oil, etc., which I find a bit stretchy. If that were the case oil would cost many more dollars because of the high insurance the oil makers would need to cover law suits. Ryde and enjoy.

they just don't anything to comeback and bite them on their butt^^
now the syptoms
mpg dropped from almost 30 to 20, performance dropped and was running hot. even at high way speed i was getting 5 bars and it's usually at 3. i dont't get 6 bars on surface street often but when i got to vegas and got trapped in strip traffic, it was 6 bars all the way thru it. it never reached 7bars but i was shaking in my boots.

oh and i used up almost a quart of oil on this trip(1700 miles+) and dealer said that is not too out of ordinary but i thought it was :dontknow:

rp website does states you should change oil after 3000 miles the first time than stretch it out after that and that was my intention but...

I am having my oil changed while my spyder is at the dealership for this oil pressure sensor issue. I want everything to be ready for our big ride to LA. I asked our service manager if I should plan on an oil change while on the road. We will be riding close to 5500 miles total I estimate. He said as most of this will be highway riding and not a lot of stop and go for the majority of the miles, not to worry about it. Just keep extra oil on hand and get it changed when we get back. He always uses Spectro 4 Blue in my spyder and the dealership swears by it. They use it in all their performance machines. As I am being told this by my service manager and he handles all my warranty work, I am going to go with it.

I usually change at 4000, check and usually put a 1/2 qt in at 2000 mile mark. I am doing a change this weekend and will be using this oil for the first time. It was recommended by an old BRP tech.

mechanic made a big deal about rp oil not being right weight and not full syntehtic. i told them new brp oil is same weight and blend as rp and he went "oh really?" i think it was the mechanic who left the note.
service writer i been dealing with has been very nice but the mechanic who actually works on my spyder has been on my case but it seems he still does what he supposed to regardless when it comes to his job so...

Hey Smokster, our dealership swears by the Spectro but he doesn't recommend the full Synthetic, too slippery or something like that. I know Brian has used Spectro Gold, the blend in his spyder for most of his oil changes I believe.

I just bought a case, so I hope it works.
BRP was a full synthetic before, what would be different?
I guess I will have a report after this weekend. I ride hard, so we will give it a test.

Thanks for the input. I am at about 4400 on the oil change...all is well so far. But if it starts to have the symptoms you had I will have an idea what to do. My mileage has consistently been in the low 30s and running like a sewing machine!

My dealer swears by Amsoil full synthetic. I've been running it for 3,500 miles with no issues. Seems like there are lots of opinions among the dealers. So, who's right? :dontknow:

i run very hard most of time so same oil in my spyder will not last in my spyder as long as it may in other's. i think rp website said after the 2nd oil change some have changed their oil every 8000 miles without any problem

This is a far reaching comparison, but it's like "who is the best doctor in town?" For me, it's the one who saved my life! There are so many variables in mechanics and oil and rider habits, I don't think there is any 100% answer. It comes down to what each individual feels comfortable with. What works for me may not work for you, etc. But the good thing about the Forum is that we share the good, the bad, and the ugly and we learn from our mistakes and our successes! Happy Trails and Ryde Safe!

I personally use Amsoil but.... I think all full synthetics (not blends) are heads above anything else. Just make sure that the oil is not marked "Energy Conserving" and is rated less than "SM"... like SJ.

5000 Miles on oil before oil change

I've been running Amsoil in all my motorcycle (5) With the heat in Arizona I use the 20w50 Full synthetic and have no problems. :2thumbs: Might think to up grade to 20w50 syn. because the spyder runs a little hot for the summer then maybe back to 10w40 in the fall. Me I leave 20w50 all year round

The RP is a full synthetic - not a 'blend'.

I personally don't care what the oil maker says - the Spyder manual says to change every 3,000 - so I'm doing it!

It's not only about your oil lasting 3,000 or 5,000 miles - it's about how contaminated it gets and how well the filter is still working to keep everything clean.

It's just not worth the risk going 5,000 miles in my book. Frequent oil changes are the cheapest way to keep your engine safe.

Never heard of Spectro----- anyone know who makes it?

I think the length of time between your oil changes had more to do with your problems than the brand of oil. Also not sure how well you can tell the Spyder lost a quart due to the way the oil readings are taken.

i had to put almost a quart in it during and after the trip to bring it back to the level i started trip at? :dontknow:
i did not mean i am having problem with the royal purple oil. i like them. i just put too many miles on before my first oil change after i switched.
