• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. Zumo 450 in the Car

The Zumo 450 doesn't require the cradle to run. I think it should work good in your car. You probably won't get any audio out of the Zumo 450 as that signal comes through the cradle's audio jack. I got my 450 about three months before I got my Spyder and I used it in my car a couple of times. I did hook up through the cradle but I didn't have a Garmin 12volt adapter at the time. I just wired a cigarette lighter adapter onto the cradle wiring. Also, I think it can run 4 hours or more on its internal batteries when they are fully charged.

I have the Zumo 550, I beleive they are basicly the same. The main difference being no bluetooth on the 450. I use mine all the time in the trucks but with cradle. On mine the 12V cable plugs into the cradle not the 550 itself. BJT is right you will have no sound without the cradle. But you have the directions at the top. The battery is supposed to work about 4 hrs. I used mine once on the Rune, before I got an extra cable and had it hardwired. I used it about 3 hrs.

Do you have the garmin 12v adapter now? How does that connect to the Zumo It looks like its a different connection than the USB connection. My Trip is about 5 - 5.5 hours so don't think the battery will hold up that long or i would just run it off battery and charge it off my laptop later. I'm not concerned with Audio i don't even use that feature on the Spyder i'm just trying to save the 100$ they want for the car cradle.

If my battery runs flat its time to stop for a brew and have the barmaid recharge it for me.

I thought the 450 came with the Auto cradle and power cable. My 550 did, I guess another difference. Just looked at the Garmin website in accesories there is a 12V power cable, which has a note to 450 users, cable will only work with the cradle, looks like from Garmin that would be $126 for both. I have bought extra MC power cables from www.gpscity.com looks there price for both is $87.00 don't know about shipping. Looks like if the battery won't do it for you, you have no choice.
You could take the AC adapter that plugs into the unit and charge it along the way, or as you said charge it off your computer, but would take a little time.

Does that 12 volt adapter plug into your existing cradle? You could just undo the RAM mount from your bike and take the cradle off for use in your car. It would be kind of a pain but for a once or twice type of thing, I would think its no big deal. However, if you wanted to constantly switch from the Spyder to the car, it sounds like you need to buy the auto cradle also. My Zumo 450 would not charge off of my computer through the USB cable. Thats why I bought a 12 volt cigarette adapter hooked that to the standard motorcycle cradle's wires for my initial use of the GPS.

The Lowrance XOG that my wife bought is much more transportable as it never requires a cradle. The audio socket is built into the GPS, the power socket is built into the GPS and its "cradle" is only a plastic bracket to hold the GPS. Plus it has a built in speaker so you can hear the turn by turn directions or the music stored on the SD card through the audio jack, the speaker or both. I would probably get the XOG if I had it to do all over again. It was about 1/3 the cost of the Zumo 450 too.

Brian, wasn't Deb having some issues with the XOG in Gatlinburg? I remember her telling me that it was taking around half an hour after being turned on to pick up satellite signals. Has that been sorted out?

Bruce

The connector that plugs into the bike cradle is completely different from the connector on the car lighter cord that plugs into the car cradle. But that said, you could get a extra bike cable, about $20 and put a lighter plug on the end. It's only a hot and ground. Then you could use your bike cradle. no sound though.

Good point. LOL I forgot about that. She hasn't really used it since we got back home from Gatlinburg and, for us, its "out of sight, out of mind". We should check into it some more and maybe get in contact with Lowrance to see what the deal is.

Bruce, I have used it two or three times since Gatlinburg and for what ever reason, the darned thing works now. It finds me rather quickly. Go figure. Overall, for the money the XOG is a pretty good piece of equipment for my purposes. I really don't need anything more than it is.

Must be that once it figured out how to handle the winding roads in Gatlinburg, our straight, flat roads are no biggie. :D
